For your planning purposes, here is what is coming up for FBLA! Competitive Events season is approaching. Find competitive events posted outside my room B109, or at the following link: http://www.cteresource.org/fbla/hs_competitive_events/index.html It is first come, first served.
Our region has not yet set firm dates, but the testing sessions are usually in late January to mid-February. Objective tests are given here at the high school, after the school day, usually in the Distance Learning Lab. Competitive Events that have a presentation component usually are judged at an after-school event in the Henrico/Richmond area. The date I have of February 20th is unconfirmed, but it will generally be around that time. Once students have competed, we will have a Regional Spring Awards ceremony, usually at the JA Finance Park, to which we travel after school. This event has been held on a Thursday in mid-March, in the past. This Awards Ceremony is where we find out who has placed high enough to move on to compete at the state level (State Leadership Conference, SLC).
Once we know who is eligible to go to State, the whirlwind begins. We must pay our registration for State by March 26th. The SLC is an OVERNIGHT event. The dates are April 17 – 19th. We travel up on Friday (missing the school day) and we will travel back on Sunday, to be home around noon. The event is held in Reston, Virginia; we will not know which hotel we get until after we register as hotels are assigned by lottery. The conference hotel is HYATT REGENCY RESTON (1800 Presidents Street, Reston, VA 20190 703.925.8185) but we might well be placed into an overflow hotel. If we are in an overflow hotel, we will use the hotel shuttle to go back and forth to the conference hotel. For parents who wish to stay at the conference, you can get the conference room rate as well; however, to attend any conference events [such as the opening and closing ceremonies or concurrent sessions], you will also need to pay the SLC registration fees. Most parents who come along do not attend the conference itself but enjoy the proximity to DC while their child is attending conference events.
Registration in the past has been $80 per participant, and hotel rooms were $140 ($125 with a 12% room tax of $15) per night. If you are the only one in the room, you would pay the whole cost. If there are 2 people, it is split two ways, etc. Up to 4 FBLA members may share a room; we make every effort for students to be 4 to a room so it is cheaper, including partnering with other FBLA chapters from our region. Rooms are either male or female. You will also need some additional spending money for meals. There is also a $4 transportation fee from the school. Since we have been very successful in fundraising, we should be able to participate in making the room costs less if there is only one or two to a room.
Please note that if you win at state, you will be eligible to compete at Nationals June 29th to July 2st in Salt Lake City, Utah. I do not yet have information for costs, but it will be expensive, considering we will have to fly and it is longer [5 nights] so it is going to be a costly experience no matter what. There will undoubtedly be costs to the competitor, but our chapter will also be working hard to keep the trip as affordable as possible.
I hope this information helps you to plan. As soon as I have more specifics, I will communicate them to you, but I wanted everyone to have the framework for the competitive season now, so you and your family can start making decisions. I am so excited for the great things New Kent FBLA is doing this year. Our chapter made some ambitious goals this year, and we are Leaders in the Capital Region. With your help we will remain an Honor Chapter and can achieve Gold Seal status this year. Thank you for being a part of the New Kent Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America!
