Today was about community in so many ways, and it was because of our community that we Rotarians were able to host our annual Breakfast With Santa. Even though some unexpected early-morning downed power lines threw off our initial plans, our community friends quickly supported us about an hour before the event started so that we could still have the full event and host our biggest breakfast ever! This year, we were able to serve nearly 400 pancake breakfasts and provide 216 gift boxes for youth in the community! Now for the very important notes of appreciation:
▪️Thank you to AJ at New Ken Social/Preserving Underground, our initial location, for letting us take over the space, while also spending the early morning trying to get things running again. We were still able to pass out gift boxes to all the youth at the site before they headed to the breakfast just a block away. Power was restored by 10 a.m., just in time for his Preserving shop to open and carolers performing later. Be sure to stop by to check out the record shop, concert venue and chapel space when you’re in town!
▪️When we were still trying to figure out how we could host the breakfast portion, our friends KNEAD Community Cafe didn’t hesitate to offer up their event hall for us to use. Their team also let us share their kitchen oven space, helped keep the space clear, let us borrow utensils and played holiday music. The cafe is a must-stop for dining in New Kensington, while supporting their community mission!
▪️We had a great group of student volunteers from Burrell High School’s Interact Club and National Honors Society help serve breakfast, greet guests and clean up.
▪️A couple of Santa’s elves, Jamie and Michelle, held a Letters to Santa activity during the event and provided Mural Scavenger Hunt printouts for the gift boxes.
▪️The breakfast and gift boxes were made possible thanks to donations from Mike and Sherri McCleary, Representative Bob Brooks, Chris Kaminski, Mazziotti Bakery, Clearview Credit Union and club Rotarians.
▪️This weekend’s events (and many that have been held in New Kensington) are organized and/or supported by the City of New Kensington Recreation Commission, Olde Towne Overhaul and the many wonderful small businesses and other organizations in the city and region. Be sure to support our local towns’ businesses and organizations!
▪️Last, but definitely not least, our club’s Rotarians, who are professionals and friends in the AK Valley, who serve our mission to do good in the community and truly aim to be “People of Action” and service. (If you’re interested in learning more about Rotary, send us a message!)
And a special thanks to everyone in the community who attended the event. We hope you smiled and enjoyed the morning as much as we did! 🎄
