📣 80 Merit Badges Updated for 2026

Scouting America has refreshed 80 merit badges for 2026—some received minor tuneups, while others were fully overhauled to reflect today’s technology, safety practices, and learning needs.

The goal? To modernize and strengthen the merit badge program so it remains relevant, meaningful, and accessible to Scouts.

🔎 Key Updates Now in Effect (as of January 1)

Careers & Hobbies Expanded
Many badges now include both career and hobby exploration options, giving Scouts flexibility to connect their interests to future opportunities.

Personal Fitness Overhaul
• Physical exam requirement removed (Scouts discuss the importance instead)
• Requirements accessible to Scouts with disabilities
• Nutrition language updated for sensitivity
• 12-week program clarified as consecutive (with flexibility for extenuating circumstances)

Modern Technology Added
• Radio now includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 5G and RFID
• Model Design and Building includes digital design and 3D printing
• Weather adds checking forecast sources before activities

Safety Enhancements
• Public safety and “If You See Something, Say Something” added
• Travel safety and online safety updated
• Leave No Trace integrated into additional outdoor badges

Other Significant Updates
• Chess expanded to include openings and tournaments
• Search and Rescue clarifies staying put and signaling
• Traffic Safety addresses distracted driving and blind spots
• Wilderness Survival emphasizes planning and decision-making

These updates help ensure Scouts continue developing real-world skills while upholding the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Leadership and Character Building...with fun in the Outdoors
For over 100 years, the Scouting program has helped create generations of leaders and outstanding citizens by allowing boys and girls to explore their interests, serve their communities, and discover their talents through youth-led activities like hiking, camping, and volunteering!

Scouts BSA (formerly “Boy Scouts”) is the traditional Scouting experience where boys and girls can have their share of adventure in the great outdoors. Develop a love of service by volunteering in our community, boost your leadership skills through fun and exciting challenges, and create memories of a lifetime with no prior Scouting experience required! Youth in a community are organized into Troops that are either boy-only, girl-only, or co-ed.

Join Troop 2191 Wednesday, January 28th at 7:00pm in the Brighton District Library. This will be an opportunity to learn about Scouts BSA; how it is different from a pack, how it can really help Scouts become independent, confident leaders and how Scouts' can still be involved in many different other activities. You'll have a chance to learn about how a troop works, meet some local leaders and get your questions answered. In the meantime, visit www.discoverscouting.org

-My Camp Rotary Winter Camp Summary-
I share this with you because I firmly believe when we find a camp that scouts and cubs enjoy it should be shared to help elevate the level of activity/adventure of all units.

The end of Camp Rotary Winter Camp finally arrived (normally a 4 night cabin camp). I'm there in the back row on my tippy toes in this picture. 😉 I brought up a quarter of BSA Troop 2191. When faced with adversity these girls have nothing but great things to say about this winter camp. I've heard they even like it more than summer camp. They get to do merit badges BUT more importantly they get to mingle with other troops from all over the state! They talk, play board games and simple just enjoy a layed back camp.

Our arrival on Friday PM was delayed to Saturday AM because of no power. Sunday the power went out at 2pm. This is where all the unique fun began. Thanks to the Rotary Club up there in Clare the dinning hall has a new generator installed after summer 2025. It powered the whole building like a champ! The power camp back on Tuesday AM a few short hours before we left.

The food! They always have a salad bar for lunch and dinner plus the main dish. The morning salad bar contains yogurt, fruit and a main dish. If you ever experienced Camp Munhacke the food here is on par with that.

This winter camp out and honestly everything they do at Camp Rotary is put on by scouters that love the program and believe in it. They are true gems!

If you get the chance to have your Cubs up there (check their website and bookmark it https://michiganscouting.org/camping/properties/camp-rotary/) or ponder the winter 2026 camp please give them a chance. Once you go you will return. I brought the girls up there the first time for winter camp last year 2025. We will return in 2026. I will be picking up a merit badge and teaching it as well. This is how much I believe in this camp and the scouters running it. ❤️

Side bar on the 5 Cub Scout camps they run. There are cabins up there. In the winter time your pack can rent a cabin for lets say Saturday night and then go to Snow Snake Ski & Golf the next day. You can day trip it or come up with a weekend adventure knowing that your Saturday until 3 or 3:30 will be planned for you.

We survived! Power restored just after 7:30am. Finishing merit badges then time for cleanup and heading home. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
