New Hope Historical Society

New Hope Historical Society To attain, preserve and interpret the diverse historical influence of New Hope.

Since its founding in 1958, the New Hope Historical Society has made a significant progress preserving historical and cultural aspects of New Hope. Efforts that began with the Parry Barn and the Parry Mansion Museum continue to go forward. The furnishings of the 8 rooms reflect 125 (1775-1900) years of decorative changes experienced by the Parry family. Each room represents a different time period

during which the Parry’s occupied the mansion. It was the inspiration of Charles Lamar, noted decorative historian and Interior designer. Since 1966, the New Hope Historical Society has maintained this splendid mansion house museum, the centerpiece of New Hope as a tribute to the American experience.

New Hope Historical Society is honored to post this beautiful video by our dear friends and generous partners in New Hope, The Dancing Elephant Art Gallery, Heidi Breyer Music and Alexander Volkov Fine Art. View this piece of art at The Dancing Elephant before it is loaned to The Parry Mansion in late Summer. For pricing contact Heidi Breyer at The Dancing Elephant. Built by Benjamin Parry in 1784, the Parry Mansion became home to the five generations of the Parry family and an important landmark celebrating nearly 250 years of American History. After one of his mills was destroyed by fire, Benjamin Parry rebuilt it and called it
the New Hope Mill, which gave name to the town of New Hope as we know it today. Margaret Parry Lang, the last surviving member of the Parry family sold the building to the New Hope Historical Society and it has become a museum, meticulously restored
to reflect the styles of the time past. This painting was inspired by the sense of timelessness and history which embraces you the minute you step inside of this building, but it was also inspired by the portrait of a young woman, Jane Paxson, the wife of Benjamin Parry, hanging on one of the walls. It is her features that you see here. I imagine, somewhere in time, it must have been like this, when at the end of the day it was the light of a candle or an oil lamp that illuminated the rooms, when there was time - time to listen to the silence, time to dream and to wonder, time - time to listen to the silence, time to dream and to wonder, time to be fully present in this moment of time called Life.

This weekend, visit New Hope Historical Society at Parry Mansion to see paintings by self-taught artist Jean Halter, co-owner of the beloved River House restaurant (now the site of Odette’s), and learn about her family’s connection to New Hope’s rich artistic and cultural history. Her husband, Robert Halter, co-authored the humorous weekly column in the New Hope Gazette—another wonderful connection to our upcoming Moonlight Over The Delaware Gala.

While you’re here, don’t miss our special exhibit featuring Parry’s personal items, offering a rare glimpse into the life behind the art.
