ETHAN ALLEN CAPTURED
Ethan Allen easily took over Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point in May 1775 with troops from the disputed land grants of both New York and New Hampshire, and regular sanctioned troops led by Benedict Arnold from Connecticut. There were no casualties on either side, but leadership conflicts and Allen’s undisciplined men alienated the 2 leaders. Ultimately the 2 split their troops. Arnold’s headed back to Washington’s Boston command while Henry Knox the 24 year old artillery leader- wrestled most of the major guns down the Hudson Valley and overland to Dorchester Heights. They then threatened the British blockade of Boston. 19,000 American troops surrounded 9000 British troops and ships. Allen stayed on the northern lakes, but Arnold’s reports saw him replaced in his command by Generals Montgomery, Schuyler, and Seth Warner in the new “Northern Division’s” mission to attack British Canada. Congress authorized Allen to recruit French settler militias from territory along the St. Lawrence River in late August, 1775. Although he knew he was supposed to stay on the riverside, Allen crossed to the western edge of the large island where Montréal’s old city lies about 10 miles to the east. He attacked the small garrison at Longue-Pointe and 70 of his men were killed. On September 25th, 1775 the British army captured Ethan Allen and 30l of his “Green Mountain Boys” in this skirmish. The citizenry became agitated and angry at the perceived aggression by Americans. This poisoned any support by Canadian sympathizers as the army started their siege of Montreal. In fact it created more local militias to counter Americans. In November, the British Governor and General Carleton abandoned Montréal and pulled his troops back to re-fortify a massive citadel at Quebec City. The American command followed the British marching east to lay siege at Quebec. They were too late to prevent the arrival of several thousand Scots troops to Quebec. Meanwhile George Washington separately authorized Benedict Arnold leasing a select band of woodsmen through Eastern Massachusetts (Maine) north to join the siege at Quebec by December. The men on the sweep from Montreal were to join him there, but only Arnold actually succeeded in his half of the plan. By the end of 1775 they attacked the citadel in a massive snowstorm. The Americans lost that fight despite the valiant efforts of Benedict Arnold, and instead General Montgomery died in the battle, Arnold was wounded.
After months in prison on horrible British warship prisons in New York harbor, Allen was allowed to live on Staten Island and was exchanged for a captured British general in 1778. He was returned to the American encampment at Valley Forge as the British held Philadelphia at that point. For the rest of the war he led a local militia from his farm in Vermont and wrote his memoirs.
