Squash Haven

Squash Haven is an after-school and weekend enrichment program for New Haven youth.

Our mission is to promote academic, athletic, and personal growth through a program of squash instruction, individual academic support/tutoring, health and fitness.

Earlier in February, 46 Squash Haven students had the opportunity to play in ’s Urban Team Nationals!! It was a really incredible weekend filled with fun, laughter, and some EXCELLENT squash. Our High School Girls A team came in third in their division and our Middle School Girls A team came in FIRST in theirs! Another amazing highlight is that Natalie Moreno, in 11th grade, won the SEA Academic Competition with her digital drawing of how to regrip a squash racquet. We are so proud of everything this team has accomplished!!

It’s college acceptance season!! Congratulations to Hamida and Manayil on their early decision acceptances. Hamida got her acceptance to Barnard College and Manayil will be headed to George Washington University come Fall! These girls have worked so hard and we are so excited to see what they do next! The future is bright 💫

This past weekend a group of Squash Haven students had the opportunity to play in the PVD Squash Junior Gold tournament! Our kids played hard and had an awesome time. We would like to give a huge thank you to Renee Diao and Christina and Jacob Price for hosting our kids and supporting them all weekend.

INDIVIDUALS 2024! This past weekend, our middle and high school students traveled up to Salisbury School and Berkshire School to compete in the annual Squash and Education Alliance Individuals Tournament! We had an absolute blast. It’s always a joy to watch our students compete, coach each other, and enjoy some time together! Some highlights include senior Rose winning the Ty Griffin Award, 8th grader Leo coming in 3rd place in his division, newbies playing their first ever tournament, college graduate Coach Rachel coaching many students to victory, and our seniors giving it their all at their last tournament as high schoolers.

What a great weekend! A huge thank you to SEA for organizing this tournament, and to Salisbury and Berkshire for hosting. We can’t wait for the next one!

For now, our students get a few weeks off before we kick off our summer program on July 1st! Stay tuned!

Say hello, and CONGRATULATIONS, to Squash Haven’s 2024 Senior Class! We are so proud to spotlight our LARGEST senior class ever for everything they have accomplished this year, and all that they will accomplish in the years to come. Some seniors were in the program for 8 years, others for 2, and others somewhere in between, but at the end of the day, they all embraced the Squash Haven experience and contributed to our community in meaningful ways.

We have a tradition here at Squash Haven where we give every senior a t-shirt of the post-secondary program they are attending, a graduation cord, and a frame with a word that describes them. Some of this year’s words included Kind, Familial, Powerful, Engaging, Curious, Driven, Persistent, and Passionate. This year’s seniors are headed off to a number of places, such as UConn, Conn, Yale, Bucknell, SCSU, Quinnipiac, Gateway, American, and Dickinson. Wow, what a class! We are so proud of all of them!

Huge congrats to all of our seniors and their families for an incredible journey so far. BUT…we are just getting started! We are super excited to continue working alongside these students as they prepare to enter the next stage of their life.

Another year, another party! Last Friday, we hosted our Annual End of Year Party to mark the end of our program year and to celebrate all of our wonderful students and their families! Throughout the night, we celebrated students for their attendance, squash enthusiasm, commitment to fitness and well-being, community engagement & citizenship, and improvement throughout the year! We also honored four special students—Middle Schooler of the Year, High Schooler of the Year, MS Rookie of the Year, and HS Rookie of the Year—for their outstanding performance all year!

A HUGE congratulations to all of our students for an outstanding year, and a BIG THANK YOU to all of our families for the incredible commitment they make to our students’ overall well-being and success.

And while this celebration may mark the end of the program year, we still have a lot to look forward to! Next up: SEA Individuals this weekend!

We are so proud to spotlight another one of our rockstars who just graduated from college: RACHEL!

Rachel is truly a gem. She has been among our most loyal students over the years that she has been a member of the team. Rachel was always dedicated to her academics and consistently worked hard in the classroom to achieve her goals. On the court, she was passionate about developing her game, so she worked hard during practice, showed up for extra squash sessions, and asked coaches to help her master new skills. As early as 9th grade, Rachel was competing at the varsity level, and she soon rose through the ranks to compete at the #1 position. When she transitioned to Connecticut College, Rachel continued to show up and work hard on and off the court, as she went on to play at the #1 position AND earn a degree in Neuroscience, which is no easy feat!

And while Rachel is a leader in the classroom and on the squash court, she is also a leader in the community. Throughout her four years in college, Rachel continued to come back to Squash Haven, hopping on court with her younger teammates, traveling with us to tournaments to coach our students, and even leading the high school seniors on our college trips last August. Since graduating, Rachel has been coming to practice everyday, and she has earned the official title of Coach Rachel.

We have loved seeing Rachel’s journey through Squash Haven, and have appreciated working alongside her entire family, who have also been very committed to the program since day one.

CONN-GRATS, Rachel, on this incredible accomplishment! We are SO excited to see all that you will continue to accomplish on and off the court!

GRADUATION SEASON IS HERE!

We are SO excited to share with you our students who graduated from college this year. First up is the one and only Coach Franki! Franki first joined Squash Haven in the 7th grade, and he has never looked back. If you ask Franki about his early years in the program, he will often say that he wasn’t always a fan of extra homework or intense squash sessions, BUT that he stayed because of the community that Squash Haven offered. After graduating from Career High School, Franki went on to enroll at Gateway Community College AND he started working at Squash Haven as our Assistant Squash Coach. Over the years, Franki has balanced his coaching responsibilities with a demanding course schedule.

Today, we are SO proud to share that Franki has graduated from Southern Connecticut State University. CONGRATULATIONS, FRANKI, on this INCREDIBLE accomplishment. Franki is the FIRST in his family to graduate from college: a true role model at home AND at Squash Haven!

Our program year is starting to come to an end, BUT the fun at Squash Haven continues! Last weekend, our college guy and certified squash coach , Christian, traveled up to Rhode Island with a group of 14 kids for the Providence Open, hosted by Squash and Education Alliance at SquashBusters. We had a BLAST! Some highlights include Natalie (super star 10th grader) coaching her teammates during tough matches, high schoolers cheering on middle schoolers, and THREE of our students walking away with some trophies! Jonathan came in 2nd in his division, Ally came in 3rd in her division, and Anderson came in 3rd in his division. Overall, everyone had an AWESOME weekend and played really well. We are so proud of this crew!

Meanwhile, down in Stamford, Coach Santiago traveled to a Silver Tournament, where Mya and Adiel walked away with 2nd place trophies for their division. WAY TO GO, TEAM!

These two tournaments bring us closer to the end of the year, but we still have a lot left in the tank! Coming up in a few weeks: SEA INDIVIDUALS! See y’all there!

Our juniors have officially hit the ground running with the college process! Every spring, Squash Haven takes our juniors to visit colleges across the Northeast, and this year, we visited Wesleyan, Tufts, Amherst, Holy Cross, BU, Northeastern, Williams, and Union. We are SO excited for our juniors to really embrace the process and find their path after high school.

BONUS: during one of the days of our College Week, our freshman also got to partake in the fun! We took them to see Connecticut College and UConn so that they could get a sense of what they can start working towards as they continue their high school careers. A joy all around!
