This past week, a member of our Peaceful Pastures family participated in the demolition derby at the Armada Fair for the very first time—and you KNOW we had to get in on the fun! 🤣💥

And of course… if one of our own is going out there to smash some cars, we HAD to make sure there was a Peaceful Pastures logo proudly displayed right on that hood! 🐴🤍🏁

How cool was it to see our logo out there in front of everyone?! Our mission may be all about giving horses a second chance, but we absolutely love showing up and supporting the people who make up this incredible barn family, too. 🤍

Our buddy Jaden absolutely ROCKED his first-ever derby, taking 7th overall! 👏🏼🔥 We had the best time helping build, decorate, hang out in the pits, and of course cheer him on!

Way to stay hype, have faith, and ROCK IT, Jaden! 🙌🏼

Peaceful Pastures may usually be filled with horsepower of a different kind… but for one night, we traded four hooves for four wheels. 🤣🐴➡️🏎️

🐴 MEET THE HORSES — Z**i 🐴

And just like that, we’ve made it to our last Meet the Horses post! Meet our girl, Z**i — otherwise known as our resident TANK. 🤣 Around here, we like to say she’s Built Z**i Tough!

Z**i is vet-estimated to be in her late teens, and she is truly one of the easiest-going souls you’ll ever meet. She may be the stockiest horse in our barn, but don’t let her size fool you — this girl is an absolute gentle giant. ❤️ She will stand ALL day long while the littles brush on her, love on her, and, of course, feed her every treat they can get their hands on.

Speaking of treats… Z**i would like it formally documented that she strongly dislikes celery. 😂 But sour Skittles?! Now THAT is the way to this girl’s heart. 🍬

Before coming to Peaceful Pastures, Z**i was a trail-riding pro, spending her days carrying a grandmother and her grandkids down the trails. As the grandkids grew older and eventually got horses of their own, Z**i found herself as the only mare and began getting picked on by the herd. Eventually, this sweet girl found her way to us — and she has fit in like she’s always belonged here. 🥹

Z**i’s best friend? Well… pretty much everyone. 🤣 She gets along with just about anybody, although she definitely has a soft spot for her handsome boyfriend, Koda. ❤️
With her calm, patient, gentle personality, Z**i would absolutely thrive spending her days tooting little kiddos around on a leadline or soaking up endless attention in a petting-zoo-type atmosphere. Give this girl some kids, a brush, and a pocket full of treats, and she is HAPPY.

Big body. Big personality. Even bigger heart.

🐴💕 MEET THE HORSES — BEIJA! 💕🐴

Meet Beija, our beautiful and spunky 17-year-old Thoroughbred! Before her Peaceful Pastures days, Beija had a very different job — racing! She is what we call an Off-the-Track Thoroughbred (OTTB) and even has a lip tattoo, although after all these years it’s no longer quite legible.

Beija was surrendered to us when her owners were simply trying to find the best possible placement for her because of her blindness. A couple of years ago, after having a foal, Beija developed a fungal eye infection that quickly took the vision in her right eye.

Because she can’t see what’s happening on that side, Beija can be a little anxious some days and needs some extra patience and reassurance. 🤍

But don’t let that fool you — this girl has S***K! She loves attention, especially having her beautiful hair braided. 🥰

Her current favorite pastime? Figuring out how to remove her fly mask in the pasture and then proceeding to stomp all over it. 🤦‍♀️🤣 Apparently protective fly gear is optional in Beija’s world!

From the racetrack to motherhood and now her sanctuary life, Beija has quite the story. These days, she simply gets to enjoy being loved, understood, and cared for exactly as she is. 💕

🐴💙 MEET THE HORSES — CHANCE! 💙🐴
Meet Chance, or as we lovingly call him, Chancey Boy! At only 5 years young, Chance is our youngest herd member — and our big, goofy boy! 😂

Chance is triple registered and originally came from Texas. He was purchased by a gal hoping he would become her hunter/jumper partner. Unfortunately, after bringing him home and beginning to work with him, it was discovered that Chance had several injuries that would require surgery — something that simply wasn’t in the cards for them.

Wanting to give Chance his best chance at life, the incredibly selfless decision was made to surrender him to Peaceful Pastures. 🤍

Chance may be a giant, but he is ALL personality! He absolutely LOVES water and would happily stand there being sprayed with the hose all day long. 💦 He hates flies with a passion, and you better believe he’ll let the entire barn know if you’re even one minute late with breakfast or dinner! 😂

So what does Chance’s future look like? We are actively working toward grants and future fundraisers with the hope of getting him the surgery he needs to become 100% sound and potentially rideable.

But until then?
He simply gets to be Chance. 🤍

He gets to play with his buddies, be goofy, enjoy his water, demand his meals on time, and live a life where nothing is expected of him except to be happy.
And we think he deserves exactly that. 🐴💙

🐴🤎 MEET THE HORSES — DAKOTA! 🤎🐴

Meet Dakota, or as our barn family lovingly calls him, Koda! At 13 years old, Koda is one big ol’ teddy bear with the sweetest, gentlest soul. 🧸🤎

Dakota landed here as his forever residence due to an old injury that was not properly treated or healed. Because of this, he experiences stiffness and has some days where even the simplest mobility can be difficult for him.

Koda is on some of the best joint supplements we can give him to help keep him comfortable and feeling like the best version of himself. But don’t let his stiffness fool you! Put him outside with his buddy Chance, and suddenly Koda remembers he’s still got some get-up-and-go! 😂🐎
His absolute favorite thing, though? His humans. 🤍 Dakota LOVES snuggles, pets and simply being close to people. You can often find him with one of our amazing volunteers hanging out — or even napping together in his stall. 🥹

Dakota is a sweet, gentle boy who deserves nothing but the world. Here at Peaceful Pastures, he gets to take life at his own pace, receive the care he needs, play with his buddy, and soak up every ounce of love he can get.

🐴🤍 MEET THE HORSES — RYLEE! 🤍🐴

Meet Rylee, the oldest lady here at Peaceful Pastures at 26 years young! 🥰

Rylee’s journey brought her all the way from a kill pen in Iowa. She was originally saved by a sister rescue, but because of her age and need for a warm stall during Michigan winters, their setup simply wasn’t the best fit for her.

Rylee came to us during one of the coldest weeks of winter. Bundled up in her winter blanket, tucked into a stall with soft bedding and protected from the winter wind, she conquered it like a pro! ❄️🤍

Now that the weather is warm, Rylee is loving life outside with her BFF pasture gals. 🌾
At 26, Rylee doesn’t have many teeth left, so she’s on a special mashy soup diet of senior feed and alfalfa to make sure she gets everything she needs.

Her favorite things? Pets from the kids, her pasture girlfriends, and secretly accepting any Sour Patch Kids you’re willing to offer. 😂

Rylee has exactly ONE speed around here: Rylee speed. AKA… slow. 😂 And we are perfectly okay with that because this chapter of her life is all about retirement, comfort, love, and doing things on her own time. 🤍
We’re so thankful this sweet senior gets to spend her golden years simply being Rylee.

MEET THE HORSES — FIRST UP: ANTHEM! 🤍🐴

Meet Anthem, our handsome 19-year-old who is completely blind. Anthem is a dominant white horse, a rare genetic trait that gives him his beautiful white hair and pinkish skin.

Because Anthem is blind, he relies heavily on routine and his surroundings staying the same so he can safely navigate his world.
Anthem also highly attracts flies, so during fly season you’ll see him covered from head to toe in protective fly gear! His UV fly mask is especially important to protect his sensitive eyes from the sun when outdoors. ☀️

Most days you’ll find Anthem eating hay, soaking up all the pets, and patiently listening for his favorite sound — his dinner bowl dropping! 😂🌾

Blindness certainly doesn’t stop this sweet boy from enjoying his days. 🤍

🤍 A Little Update from Peaceful Pastures

It’s been a bit since we’ve posted. With some of the negativity we recently faced, we chose to step back from social media for a little while and simply focus on what matters most — our horses and our mission.

However, we’re happy to share that we recently welcomed Macomb County Animal Control for a wellness visit. We are incredibly blessed to have such strong animal advocates serving Macomb County. Chief and his officers had the opportunity to meet all of our rescues, learn more about our sanctuary, and share some amazing resources available to nonprofits like ours.

Thank you for introducing yourselves, sharing your knowledge, and partnering with us as we continue our mission of giving these horses the peaceful life they deserve. 🐴🤍

One wonderful suggestion they gave us was to start a “Meet the Horses” series — sharing each horse’s story, photos from when they first arrived, and who they are today in their Peaceful Pastures life.

Over the next several days, you’ll be introduced to each of our rescues and have the opportunity to learn their stories, their individual needs, and the beautiful souls behind our mission. We truly encourage you to follow along and get to know them. 🤍

Transparency is a must, especially in situations such as these. We want our community to see our horses, hear their stories, understand their care, and continue walking alongside us in this mission. After all, they are the reason we are here. 🐴🤍

Our hearts are heavy as we watch the devastation caused by the wildfires and lift up every family, first responder, animal, and community in prayer. Please join us in praying for protection, strength, safety, and comfort for all those impacted.

Here at Peaceful Pastures, we are also keeping a close eye on our sweet souls. With smoke traveling long distances, we are carefully monitoring each horse for any signs of smoke irritation or respiratory distress. Fresh water is being kept available, and extra wellness checks are being done throughout the day to ensure everyone is healthy and comfortable.

These gentle souls depend on us to be their voice and their advocate, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Please continue to pray for the firefighters on the front lines, the families who have been displaced, and all of the animals in harm's way.

❗️A Message from the Board of Directors

At Peaceful Pastures Equine Sanctuary, we believe in being transparent with our community, supporters, sponsors, volunteers, and followers.
Running a rescue is not easy. We are not a large organization with unlimited resources. We are a group of dedicated volunteers who pour our hearts, time, energy, and finances into giving horses a second chance at life. Simply put, we do the best we can every single day.
Many of the horses that come through our gates arrive emaciated, neglected, underweight, and lacking trust in people. Rehabilitation does not happen overnight. It takes months of proper nutrition, veterinary care, farrier care, supplements, patience, consistency, and love to help these horses heal both physically and emotionally.
Recently, allegations have been made against our rescue and our founder claiming that horses are being starved. These accusations are simply untrue. Because we value honesty and transparency, we felt it was important to address them publicly.
Our horses are fed hay, grain, and supplements appropriate for their individual needs. We work closely with veterinarians, farriers, trainers, and other equine professionals who regularly visit our facility and have direct eyes on our horses and our mission. Their guidance and oversight help ensure that our horses receive the care they deserve.
Peaceful Pastures was built on the love and support of our community. Our founder is a God-driven woman who has dedicated countless hours to answering the call God placed on her heart: to help horses in need. While no rescue is perfect, her commitment to these animals has never wavered.
We will not allow negativity, rumors, or false accusations to distract us from our purpose. We know our calling. We know why we are here. And we will continue to show up for these horses every single day.
We respectfully ask that those who have questions come directly to us rather than engaging in gossip or spreading misinformation. We remain committed to maintaining a positive, drama-free environment focused on what matters most—the horses.
