When we work together, great thing can happen. During school breaks throughout the year, we partner with community organizations around Greater New Haven to purchase and distribute groceries to bring fresh, nutritious food directly to our neighbors. For this year's Summer School Break Grocery distribution, we served 2,842 people and partnered with 11 different organizations to make this possible.

Thank you to the 75+ volunteers made up of families and individuals who gave their time to distribute groceries to our neighbors! We are building a community where everyone has access to nourishing food.

While Back-to-School season can be an exciting time, many families in Greater New Haven are struggling to make sure their students have the new supplies they need for a successful start to the school year. This August we partnered with several organizations and volunteers to get the supplies out to families to help ease any anxieties about the new school year. Join us in welcoming one of our newest Board Members, Mia Gratacos-Atterberry. Mia Gratacos Atterberry is an Associate in Wiggin and Dana’s Litigation Department, where she focuses on medical malpractice defense, general liability, marine insurance coverage disputes, franchise litigation, and third-party subpoenas. She also represents minor children in family court proceedings through Lawyers for Children America. Mia serves on several legal nonprofit boards and is fluent in Spanish. She holds a JD (summa cm laude) from Quinnipiac University and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University. Mia co-led the Wiggin and Dana United Way campaign this past year and is eager to get more young people involved with United Way’s work.

Join us in celebrating this year's Family Volunteer Impact Awardees, Gloribell and Joaquin! For more than five years, Gloribell and her son Joaquin have volunteered with United Way, helping neighbors access food and other supports. Together, they've packed groceries, supported holiday food distributions, volunteered with Loaves & Fishes, and helped make programs like School Break Groceries and Dinner for a Dollar possible.

Their example shows how volunteering as a family not only strengthens the community today, but also inspires the next generation to lead with compassion and generosity.

In New Haven, summer meals are offered at several locations around the city from June to late August. These sites serve a combination of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for anyone under the age of 18. This is a critical resource for families, as 39% of New Haven families with at least one child reported being food insecure. Unfortunately, this program ends a week before school starts, which means students who rely on these sites while school is out are now left without a place to go.

To help bridge this gap, United Way of Greater New Haven is partnering with local organizations* to host a School Break Groceries distribution! This is a program that runs during breaks in the school calendar to ensure students and their families have access to nutritious food. Join us on Saturday, August 15, to help distribute groceries and support local families as they prepare for the school year!

Last Friday, United Way volunteers joined the Dinner for a Dollar team to celebrate their 15 year anniversary. Dinner for a Dollar is a completely volunteer driven initiative that brings food to our neighbors through serving homecooked meals.

They serve meals in Hamden Grace and St. John's Church Friday 6-7pm, United Plains Methodist Church Saturday from 6-7pm, Sundays from the Food Truck 3-4 @ 1935 State St, and 1st and 3rd Thursdays from Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church
