Across our state, 39% of households struggle to make ends meet. Many of us who work hard still struggle to cover essentials like rent, food, and childcare-often living just one unexpected expense away from crisis. The 30|30 Experience lets you spend a simulated 30 days in the life of a struggling household making 30 decisions that impact the stability of your family. The 30|30 Experience reveals that escaping economic hardship takes much more than doing away with a daily coffee shop latte or improving budgeting skills.

Our Head Start Story

October is Head Start Awareness Month, a time to recognize what Head Start means right here in the Greater New Haven area. Via United Way of Greater New Haven's partners, we serve 88+ children and families each year, helping children build a strong foundation for school and life while partnering with parents and caregivers every step of the way. For over 10 years, Early Head Start has been part of our community, and we’re proud to continue that legacy.

Meet Shelly Hicks, the Vice President of Education at United Way. Shelly's background in education and advocacy and her connection to New Haven makes her a strong, passionate leader at United Way. Shelly is one of 3 Vice Presidents at United Way and she leads our team of education professionals that support early childcare centers, learning for parents and caregivers, and school-aged children and youth.

Access to enough clean diapers mean a healthier child, but it also means access to opportunities. The rising cost of basic necessities like diapers create a number of challenges for families struggling to get by. Many childcare centers require that parents supply a full day's worth of disposable diapers for their child to attend. When families can't meet this requirement, children may be turned away—forcing parents into the difficult situation of staying home from work. Join us in welcoming one of our newest Board Members, Susan Riggs! Susan Riggs is the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Operations at Yale, where she leads the Employee Services Center, HR Operational Services, Office of Faculty Support, and HR Innovation and Strategic Support. She joined Yale in 2006 and has held progressively senior HR roles supporting the Yale School of Medicine and officer units. Prior to Yale, Susan held leadership positions at Spherion Staffing in California and Massachusetts. She is active with DiversAbility at Yale and is the former Board Chair of New Haven Reads. Susan holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond. Susan brings nonprofit knowledge and deep Yale connections to United Way.

Summer youth programs are a vital way for children to stay connected with their peers, learn new skills, and maintain access to high-quality educational opportunities. During the summer months, we support a variety of summer programs through grants that provide school-aged youth with opportunities to engage with activities like the arts, sports, academics, gardening, outdoor recreation, advocacy, and more.

ARTE INC. at Junta for Progressive Action is one of the summer programs we supported this year and through their multi-age, bilingual program they provide chess lessons, field trips, arts and crafts, and more.

Workers who are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) care for children, check out groceries, cook meals and help with everyday banking needs. Even beyond the workplace, ALICE shows up for our communities across civic, social, cultural, religious and recreational spaces. And yet, ALICE struggles to get by, with income above the Federal Poverty Level but less than the cost of basics in their counties.
