As increasing numbers of community members struggle to afford food, housing and other essentials of daily living, the Basic Needs Fund is bringing together service organizations to collaborate on solutions.

"There are many things that we don't have control over," said New Reach CEO Kellyann Day at a recent roundtable hosted by the Fund. “We're trying to make sure we can serve as many people as possible with the limited resources that we have. One of the things that is encouraging and supportive is that our coordinated access network is strong and has good relationships, and good coordination and communication."

Attendees shared strategies and successes in their efforts to address the rise in food insecurity and homelessness, and discussed the sobering reality of how cuts to food and health care benefits will affect their clients. Nonprofits also spoke about the importance of supporting advocacy and civic engagement efforts, beyond their primary direct services.

In a recent collaboration with CT Humanities for the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, WPAA - TV and Community Media Center has produced "Moses Y. Beach Revealed" about the Wallingford native who founded the Associated Press. The project unpacks a small mystery about Beach’s birthday while asking the larger question of why Beach’s legacy has been shrouded in silence.

"The purpose of the project was to invest in revealing Mr. Beach and this hidden story of Wallingford," said WPAA-TV Executive Director Susan Huizenga. "It was to establish that there were communities of 'other' here that are still not recognized. It was to invest in creativity and storytelling and our role in it." Read more at CFGNH.org/WPAATV

On May 12, our community came together for our Annual Meeting at New Haven's Shubert Theatre for an evening of connection and inspiring thoughts and conversation on the theme of community healing through the arts.

The program began with a performance by New Haven-based musician Paul Bryant Hudson. Board Chair Fernando J. Muñiz welcomed attendees and offered reflections on The Foundation's work during his seven-year tenure. President & CEO Karen DuBois-Walton's remarks moved from the accomplishments of 2025 to the work ahead of creating more opportunity and equity, and offered a path forward with The Foundation's new strategic framework. She then welcomed to the stage featured artist Reginald Dwayne Betts for storytelling, poetry and a conversation that centered on community healing through the arts.

Our 2025/26 Report to Our Community was also unveiled at the Annual Meeting. View the digital flipbook here: https://www.cfgnh.org/about/2026-26-annual-report

The New Haven Pride Center celebrated the first day of Pride Month with the joyful reopening of its space in the city's Ninth Square. The Community Foundation President and CEO Karen DuBois-Walton joined community leaders and officials including Gov. Ned Lamont, U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, state Treasurer Erick Russell and Mayor Justin Elicker to celebrate the success of the Project Phoenix fundraising effort that allowed the center to open its doors once again and reimagine its future.

The center launched Project Phoenix after closing in February because of financial struggles. Within 30 days of a kickoff meeting hosted by The Community Foundation, 43 donors from the community contributed $500,000, enough for the Center to reopen and reimagine its future.

"Through Project Phoenix, we saw what collective action looks like," said Community Foundation President and CEO Karen DuBois-Walton at the press conference. This included "dozens of donors and partners coming together around an all-or-nothing goal." This, she said, is what it means to be a community foundation. "We cannot just observe, but we have to activate."

On Thursday, the Arts Council hosted a press conference to celebrate the launch of the Bitsie Clark Fund for Artists grant awards, and the transition of the selection process to the Council, where Bitsie's legacy began. The Fund has supported local artists since it launched in 2018.

"For the Arts Council, this is an especially significant moment, because it's the first time we have a permanent grant program at the Arts Council," said the organization's executive director Hope Chávez.

"The name Bitsie Clark will forever be associated with the Arts Council. This is the organization that she figuratively and literally built from the ground up," said Mimsie Coleman, "Bitsie Chick" and original Bitsie Fund member.

"This fund and the way it's arranged in partnership with the Arts Council, the Bitsie Chicks and The Community Foundation, it's going to memorialize Bitsie forever," said Community Foundation Development Director Sharon Cappetta. "The Bitsie Fund is a wonderful example of what happens when this community comes together for the people and the things that they care about."

Applications close June 30. Learn more about the Bitsie Fund at newhavenarts.org/the-bitsie-clark-fund
