Introducing one of our first featured poets for our event this Saturday, March 12... True!
True Rodriguez is a poet, playwright, and visual artist from Queens, NY. In her work, True deconstructs the titles thrust upon women, highlighting women's evolution in various social, political, and cultural constructs to show there is no one way to woman. True has performed at the Apollo Theatre, The Nuyorican Poet's Cafe, El Museo del Barrio, and the Bowery Poetry Club. Her play, In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows, was featured at the Broadway Community Theatre, Columbia University, and Teatro TEA in NYC. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Join Despierta Boricua and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe for a virtual performance and open-mic celebrating the poetic legacy of Julia de Burgos. The event will take place Saturday, March 12 at 4pm EST.
De Burgos was an Afro-Boricua poet and advocate of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party whose writings on Blackness, love, and migration received international acclaim. To celebrate, “Advocate of Wordz” and “True,” two acclaimed in-house poets of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, will be performing their spoken-word poetry and sharing insight into their craft. Founded in 1973, the Cafe is a multi-arts institution that “champions the use of poetry, jazz, theater, hip-hop and spoken word as means of social empowerment for minority and underprivileged artists.” Following their performance, the audience will be invited to participate in an open-mic. Audience members will have the opportunity to engage with the poets individually by continuing conversations or workshopping their own pieces.
This will be a hybrid event with both an in-person and a virtual audience. Food and refreshments will be served in-person. Please register to receive the Zoom link or indicate interest in live-audience participation. In-person attendees are welcome to join us in the Banquet (E-room) at the Afro-American Cultural Center.
