This month the Black Men’s Union would like to honor LGBTQ+ identities and its intersections with Blackness and masculinity, while celebrating Black men who have helped build a more inclusive future through their voices, stories, and advocacy.

This week, we’d like to acknowledge James Baldwin, a writer who is most notable for his essay collection Notes of a Native Son in which he explored race, love, and belonging in America. He is an activist and influential figure during the civil rights movement.

His novel, Giovanni’s Room, was one of the first major American novels that focused on a same-sex relationship, particularly during a time when publishers would avoid such topics. Baldwin also spoke freely about his experiences regarding sexuality and race, and overall paved the way for future generations who did not see their identities reflected in literature and public life.

During the month of June, the Yale Black Men’s Union recognizes Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month.

Men’s Mental Health Month is a reminder that strength isn’t about staying silent—it’s about being honest, asking for help, and taking care of yourself.

For Black men specifically, this struggle often goes unseen both from within and outside of our communities. During this time it is vital to remember to always remember to looking out for one another.

Check in with your friends. Start the conversation. Break the stigma.

Despite a heavy week of studying for finals and writing papers, the BMU had an amazing week full of unity, support, and service!

This Monday, in collaboration with Yale Blackout, we hosted a study break with free boba and Wingstop! It was a great night of community and a relaxing moment to step away from studying.

On Monday and Wednesday, we tabled at Old Campus and Bass Library to sell snacks as we fundraised for Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS) for our annual charity challenge, in which we raised over $800!

On Tuesday, we brought 6th grade students from Conte West Magnet School, who we’ve had the amazing opportunity to mentor through our Bouchet Mentorship this year, back to campus for a field trip! It was an enriching experience for the young men as we toured them across Yale and gave them insight on college life.
