On the day of Philando Castile’s funeral, the Yale chapter of NAACP would like to offer its formal solidarity with the loved ones of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and countless other black and brown people who have died at the hands of police brutality. The Yale NAACP also stands in solidarity with the families of Anthony Nunez and Pedro Villanueva, two Latino men who were shot dead by the police within the past two weeks. In addition, the chapter wishes to raise awareness and extend support to the families of Dylan Noble, a white teen who fell victim to the abuse of power by officers, as well as the loved ones of the black man found hung at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Their unnecessary and unjust deaths will not be forgotten, and the Yale NAACP will continue working towards equality for all in recognition that freedom is privilege extended unless enjoyed by everyone. Until black and brown people are truly free, until Latinax people are truly free, until q***r people are truly free, and until every marginalized community is truly free, the Yale NAACP is committed to continuing to fight and struggle against a system built on oppression. We extend our condolences to the families of the slain Dallas police officers and condemn violence. As we pay our respects to the slain police officers, it remains ever more important and ever more pressing to act on the grievances raised by Black Lives Matter and address the issue of police violence within communities of color. While the killer of the five Dallas police officers has been served swift justice, the killers of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile have not been held accountable for their actions.

During these difficult times, the chapter urges everyone - especially black and brown folks - affected to focus on healing from the psychological and physical trauma of such violence. Self-care has extreme value and the chapter encourages all to reach out to support systems within your community. In addition to offering prayers and support, action is necessary and YNAACP urges all to contribute to this cause by donating to the Gofundme for Alton Sterling’s scholarship fund and writing to you local mayors and police chiefs demanding that they play their part in holding police accountable and ending police violence. Consider also participating in rallies, vigils, and protests held in your communities to make your voices heard. Finally, your vote also matters immensely in ensuring that our lawmakers value the lives of black and brown people, and thus please register to vote. Protest in the streets and protest in the ballot. Please find below the link to Alton Sterling’s scholarship fund as well as to register to vote.

We stand with Yale students who refuse to tolerate the continued disrespect of people of color in a place that calls itself their home. Their intergenerational pain is an injustice—it should not be continued for the sake of your history lesson. Together, we rid of this campus of what John C. Calhoun represents. In the face of administrative failure, Calhoun College will now be
