Yesterday's WorkBench featured an info session about Citywide Open Studios, where artists from across CT display their art. The session was led by Elinor Slomba and provided info for artists, art enthusiasts and volunteers. This year CWOS takes place over three weekends: 10/6-7 at Erector Square, 10/13-14 in Westville and Private Studios around the New Haven area, and 10/17-28 at the Alternative Space, which will be Yale's West Campus this year.

To register as an artist or find out how to volunteer, go to https://artspacenewhaven.org/cwos-home/

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS SEPT. 1

Yesterday afternoon I was in the West Hartford area and in need of coworking space so I called John of WeHa Works. He allowed me to drop in for the day in exchange for a donation to a charity (I chose the CT Chapter of NAMI - National Alliance for Mental Illness).

I was given a tour of the space by John via a robot and given access to their workspace, kitchen and business services. What a lifesaver! I was finalizing a motivational speech I gave to students in the TRiO college access program at CCSU, which went very well.

REMOTE WORK ENVIRONMENTS
There is an enormous, Grand Canyon-sized difference between letting an employee work from home once in a while and calling yourself a “remote team.” Fully remote teams are thoughtful, strategic, and adaptable to new and better practices to make remote work more seamless. There is not an attitude of, “Just turn your laptop on in your home office and get to it!” Just like a co-located office requires considerations to make the environment more pleasing for employees, a remote company must also make specific adaptations. See link below.

The ability for employees to work outside of an office is more feasible now than ever. However, working from home doesn't always equate to clear remote work policies. Learn the differences between flexible work and remote work and how they might blur the lines of effective remote work.

Yesterday the WorkBench presentation was "Boundaries in the Workplace: When Is 'No' a Complete Sentence?" We discussed the areas that are the trickiest for setting boundaries and the areas of our lives that would improve dramatically if we set better boundaries (see the white board image below). The handout with tips and sample scripts for saying "no" is also below.

HINT about when "no" is a complete sentence - only under extreme circumstances when someone is abusive or rudely persistent should you simply say "no" without an explanation. Saying what you CAN do is your best bet, and some kind of explanation helps preserve the relationship.
