The society, established in 1914, is a forum for stamp collectors in New Haven County, Connecticut. We meet every week at our meeting room in the Chapel West District office in New Haven. The society organizes the 4th Sunday of the
Month Collectible Show which features dealers of stamps, postcards, coins and other collectibles. The 4th Sunday Show has become one of the biggest monthly stamp shows in New England. We have numerous activities planned for 2014 to celebrate our 100th year of continuous activity. Meeting Information
Meetings are held every Tuesday at 7:30pm at our club room located at 1205 Chapel Street, New Haven in the Chapel West District Office. There is ample free parking behind the building (the entrance to the parking lot is on the right of the building and NHPS members can use any of the "reserved" spaces). The weekly meetings consist of good fellowship, a short business meeting and presentation of an exhibit. There is usually a small auction at the end of each meeting. Visitors are welcome to attend. Member competitions in various fields are held from time to time, most notably the annual Hitchins competition, named in honor of Dr. C. Stanley Hitchins, a former president of the Society
Our Logo - the New Haven Postmaster Provisional
The logo of the NHPS is a reproduction of the famous "New Haven Postmaster Provisional" issued by the New Haven postmaster, Edward A. Congress authorized the prepayment of letters, effective July 1st, 1845, but the first US stamps were only issued on July 1st, 1847. During that interim period, a few postmasters including Mr. Mitchell, created their own stamps or stamped envelopes. Only eleven New Haven Provisionals are known to have survived and their catalog values range from $60,000-$100,000. In 1932 the NHPS purchased the original handstamp and donated it to the New Haven Colony Historical Society.
