United Church on the Green, UCC: New Haven, CT A place of hope on the New Haven Green. Open & Affirming since 1989. Sundays at 10am. Come as you are. A congregation of the United Church of Christ.

A progressive, Open and Affirming congregation on the New Haven Green since 1742. We believe in a world of crucifixion, the church should be a place of hope. Whether you’re a long-time believer or a seeker with more questions than answers, you will be welcomed exactly as you are, no explanation required. We have a long history of standing for justice, from the Amistad incident and the abolition of

slavery to the 1970 Black Panther trials. Today, we continue that work through our commitment to peace, social justice, and our "Just Peace" mission. Worship with us:
Sundays at 10am | In person at 270 Temple Street or online on YouTube.

When Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services lost its main office on Nicoll Street earlier this year, they needed places to keep doing the work. Our Parish House at 323 Temple Street became one of those places.

Right now, IRIS staff are meeting with refugee and immigrant families in our building. English classes, legal consultations, and the kind of face to face support that cannot happen over email. This is not new for us. UCG has partnered with IRIS for years, and our Service and Justice team works alongside CONECT to address housing, education, eldercare, and environmental justice across New Haven.

But this moment matters more than most. Federal funding has been cut. IRIS chose to step away from the federal resettlement program this year rather than participate in a system they believe no longer reflects its original humanitarian mission. They are now focused entirely on supporting the thousands of refugees and immigrants already living in Connecticut.

Our doors are open. That is not a slogan. It is literally true.

If you want to get involved with our Service and Justice ministry, reach out to Cher Balkcom. The team meets monthly on Zoom, typically the first Tuesday of the month: [email protected]

"God can't imagine a future without you. Take confidence that even if you don't understand it, your life is being used by God. Your life is being valued by God."

Some of us needed to hear that this week. Not as theology. Just as a reminder that we matter, even when it does not feel like it.

Rev. Ray, August 16, 2026.

"Take confidence that even if you don't understand it, your life is being used by God. Your life is being valued by God."

This Sunday, Rev. Ray preached on the story of Joseph meeting his brothers in Egypt (Genesis 45:1-15). Sometimes the darkest chapters of our lives are not the end of the story. Sometimes forgiveness, and purpose, show up in ways we never could have planned.

Music has always been at the heart of our worship at United Church on the Green.

Our choir returns in September. We sing everything from Bach and Mozart to jazz, blues, and gospel sounds. You do not need to be a trained singer to join us. We are just looking for people who love to sing and want to be part of a choir family.

Rehearsals are Thursdays at 7 PM. If you're interested, reach out to Caesar Storlazzi at the following: https://unitednewhaven.org/music

"It is up to us what kind of family we will be."

Rev. Ray’s message on Sunday was a powerful reminder that our past doesn’t define our future. We have the choice, every day, to create the kind of family we want to be—one built on love, hope, and care for each other.

"Our story doesn't have to be our future. Our family story can simply be a statement of the facts of what came before. It is up to us what kind of family we will be."

Rev. Ray reminds us that this is true for our personal families and for the church family. We have a choice. We can love one another, care for one another, share hope with one another, and make tomorrow better than yesterday.
