Our friends at the Junior League of Greater New Haven are screening a lively and provocative film: "Miss Representation," which examines how the mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful.
When: Thursday, March 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the New Haven Free Public Library (in the Community Room), at 133 Elm Street, New Haven. The showing is free, but please RSVP to [email protected]. After the screening, there will be community / panel discussion.

Farms, Factories, and Families: Italian American Women of Connecticut

Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 2 pm

Between 1880 and 1920, more than 4 million Italians immigrated to America, many arriving in New Haven. Italian women stood behind their husbands and managed the family economy, invested in real estate, put aside money for their children’s education, cooked meals, nurtured large families, and when times got tough, joined men on production lines. Author, historian, and photographer Anthony V. Riccio will share remarkable, poignant, and sometimes humorous details of the lives of these courageous women from his new book "Farms, Factories, and Families: Italian American Women of Connecticut."

Admission is free. Donations welcomed.
