We're headed back to Hillsdale on October 10th for the Crossroads Farm Flyer during the Hillsdale Railroad & Autumnfest! 🛤️ 🎃 Join us for a train ride to Crossroads Farm with FREE admission to their corn maze, fall crafts, concessions, outdoor games, face painting, and more included with every ticket! After the train ride, enjoy live music, food trucks, and local vendors at the Hillsdale Block Party.

NEW HAVEN! 🙈🥹 We’re sorry — there’s a new train in town! But we promise you'll like it! 🚂☺️ Join us Saturday at our restoration shop on Edgerton Road to welcome New York Central No. 3001, a 1940 steam locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company.

The New York Central was one of the world’s most famous railroads. The home of the legendary 20th Century Limited, the Great Steel Fleet, and some of the most celebrated trains in American history.

Despite its name, the New York Central was also deeply rooted in Indiana. Its rails crisscrossed our region, connecting Fort Wayne with Auburn, Waterloo, Pleasant Lake, and Angola, and carried Hoosiers even further to Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, New York City, and even Mackinac, Michigan!

After a whirlwind week bringing New York Central No. 3001 home, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the donors, members, volunteers, sponsors, and partners who made this historic move possible!

The crew that prepared and transported No. 3001 included members of the Steam Railroading Institute and Nashville Steam, along with dedicated railroad employees from Norfolk Southern, Amtrak, and other organizations.

We are especially grateful to Norfolk Southern, Kroil, Horizon Rail, Midwest Rail LLC, National New York Central Railroad Museum, and the City of Elkhart, Indiana — as well as the many employees and representatives whose work helped us reach this milestone.

Before we acquired it, the paint on Nickel Plate Road Pullman No. 1 had severely oxidized after years of exposure outdoors. After applying some polishing and cleaning compounds in select spots, we found the rich green and chocolate brown hues of the car’s traditional paint were still lingering under the dusty surface — along with a nearly mirror like finish! While this touch up work with a thin coat of linseed oil has been done in advance of our open houses, we wanted the car to look every bit as “private varnish” as the name — and its history — embodies. If you look close enough on the exterior doors and inside the vestibule, the blue and maroon layers of paint from its days on the Norfolk & Western are still visible.

Come find out at the September Railroad Open House on September 26th! Our restoration shop at 15808 Edgerton Road in New Haven will be open to the public from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM for guests to check out our newest arrivals: New York Central steam locomotive No. 3001 and Nickel Plate Road Pullman No. 1!

Get a behind-the-scenes look inside our restoration shop, tour a private Pullman car, and get up close to learn about our restoration projects, Railroad Camp, train rides, and ways you can volunteer to help make railroad history! Admission is FREE, and all are welcome.

After a day long journey, New York Central 3001 glides into our shop — and under cover for the first time since the 1950s. A special visitor goes street running in Warsaw, Indiana. After several satisfactory safety checks en-route from Elkhart, New York Central steam locomotive 3001 — accompanied by Norfolk Southern’s very own Central heritage engine — continues south on the Marion branch line to Claypool, Indiana, where it will be led to the Nickel Plate line to Fort Wayne and eventually our restoration shop in New Haven. Several months of mechanical work on the brakes, bearings, running gear, and other components have prepared this storied machine for its first mainline adventure since 1984, and marks the start of its restoration.
