Thanks to our partners at Norfolk Southern, we are en-route to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad for two weekends of trips in June before heading back to Indiana to start our summer excursion season. These upcoming events in Ohio will welcome over 6,000 people to the National Park to kick off its America 250 celebrations and have a major impact on the regional economy. Positioning moves like this do not operate on any set schedule and we cannot provide any estimates for transit or arrival times en-route. Stay safe if you head out to see us at cvsr.org or indianarailexperience.org.

As part of its America 250 celebration, Union Pacific Railroad is headed this way next week with the world's largest operating locomotive, "Big Boy" No. 4014 – BUT Fort Wayne has actually hosted a Big Boy before!

In this Journal Gazette article from 1964, sister engine No. 4012 was spotted en route to Bellows Falls, Vermont, at the Nickel Plate yard at East Wayne.

While size and space constraints limited public display options for this year's historic visit, 4014 will be laying over in this same yard between runs, and we're excited to welcome our new friends to town. While in motion, the train will be visible along the Norfolk Southern mainline through Fort Wayne and New Haven during its trip eastward, and you can catch it in Argos, Indiana, on June 5th and Fostoria on June 6th! Details are in the images below.

If you plan to see 4014 for yourself, plan to view this from public property, arrive early, and stay at least 25 feet back from the railroad right-of-way. If you're on the ballast, you're too close, so please make this a safe and memorable event, not just for yourself, but for everyone.

4014 will be visible at every public grade crossing along Lincoln Highway outside New Haven and will also travel through the elevated tracks in downtown Fort Wayne.

In 2023, we were honored to partner with the South Milford Community League and the Indiana Northeastern Railroad to rededicate a special memorial.

Originally dedicated in 1923, the monument was carefully relocated stone-by-stone to its new home at Veterans Memorial Park through an extraordinary community effort. The memorial honors local veterans across generations of American service, including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and First World War, standing as a lasting reminder of the sacrifices carried through the South Milford community for more than a century.

Fittingly, the original 1923 dedication featured a special Wabash passenger train carrying dignitaries to the ceremony. One hundred years later, the railroad once again played a role. As part of the gathering, historic Nickel Plate Road No. 765 operated a special excursion, featuring cars from our fleet and Little River Railroad, for area donors, community organizers, surviving veterans, and their families.

Events like these are a reminder that preservation is never just about locomotives or monuments. It’s about communities and the stories that tie generations together — and remembering the farmers, tailors, railroaders, shopkeepers, and family members who served, sacrificed, and never got to make the train ride home.

How to celebrate a day dedicated to trains? Well, that's every day for us! A year ago this week, we were scorching the ballast on the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway after spending time with our friends at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic, so here are a few memories from that merriment — and a few others from throughout the year!
