8/28: A Day to Take Inventory, Invest, and Give Back

August 28 is more than a date. 8/28 is a day to pause, take inventory, and reflect on the power of Black philanthropy, community investment, and collective generosity.

This year, Chase’s Chance has experienced an unprecedented increase in requests for support—especially from college students in their final year who are on the verge of stepping away from their educational goals because of changing policies, rising costs, and a lack of resources.

For some students, a little help can be the difference between finishing and walking away. For families and communities, philanthropy can be the bridge that makes opportunity possible.

Since 2013, Chase’s Chance has been committed to one important belief: every student deserves equal access, equal rights, and equal opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed—regardless of their circumstances.

That belief is at the heart of the work we do.

We know that creating meaningful change for students doesn’t happen alone. It takes families, educators, community leaders, businesses, volunteers, and nonprofit organizations coming together to remove barriers, create opportunities, and make sure every young person has a chance to reach their full potential.

Yesterday, our President had the opportunity to spend some time volunteering alongside a team from Volvo at the shift_ed Teacher Supply Warehouse. ❤️

Volunteering is always front and center for us because we believe deeply in the importance of community and showing up for those who make a difference every day.

During our time at the Warehouse, we helped sort supplies, take inventory, and prepare the space for Guilford County Schools teachers to come shop — completely free of charge and at no out-of-pocket cost to them.

And the need is real.

North Carolina teachers spend an average of $1,632 of their own money each year on classroom supplies, while North Carolina ranks 46th nationally in average teacher pay. That makes resources like the Teacher Supply Warehouse so important.

shift_ed works to remove barriers for educators and students, including through its Teacher Supply Warehouse, where Guilford County Schools educators can access free classroom supplies.

At Chase’s Chance, we understand the importance of supporting our teachers. In addition to our partnership with the Teacher Supply Warehouse since 2022, we recently donated five $200 Amazon gift cards to Guilford County teachers to help them check a few more items off their classroom supply lists.

We are grateful to be part of a community that continues to find meaningful ways to support educators and our schools. We were especially proud to have that commitment recognized in 2023 with a Spark Award, honoring community partners who creatively support our schools.

A little time, a willing team, and a shared commitment to our community can make a meaningful difference.

Assisting students is what we do. Another student supported this week & this is only because of those who continue to support our organization. Below is an actual request received this week. While we are unable to say yes to all request because it is based on incoming contributions, we do our best to support as many as we can.

“I hope you’re doing well! I’m reaching out because I’ll be leaving for college next month, and I still have a few things left on my registry. I will be attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where I’ll be majoring in Criminal Justice. I’m so excited to begin this new chapter and continue working toward my goals and future career.

If you’re able to help with anything on my registry, I would truly appreciate it! Any support, big or small, means so much to me as I prepare for college and this exciting next step in my life. Thank you so much for your kindness, support, and generosity.” -MJ💛💙

As a result we were able to clear most dorm related items from this students list. We are proud of our students who continue to work hard to complete goal’s and accomplish their dreams. Thank you for allowing Chase’s Chance, Inc to be a part of your journey.

Supporters thank you for your sweet notes of our recent milestone of donating nearly $500,000 in scholarships, sponsorship, and basic needs for students and families within our community and world however this feat is only possible because of private donations and community partners.

Donors such as yourselves make this possible because with some grants it restricts who and how we serve. Since our post we have had 2 requests from college students - one is short $2,000 to complete his tuition and another needs a hand up for a few remaining items on their college list.

Due to privacy reasons we do not often post names but do know that your donations matter. These type of request are common but it takes all of us.

Consider becoming a donor (all donations are tax deductible) if you send via Cash App please ensure that we have your email or mailing address so that we can get your receipt to you.

We are excited about this milestone but there is so many more opportunities to serve these students who are simply trying to do it the right way.

Imagine waking up to find your student balance has been paid in full. Your books have been secured. Even your study abroad costs are covered—because “someone” believed in your future (& these are just some of the examples). That “someone” is 21 year old Chase Clark, founder of Chase’s Chance, Inc.

For the past 13 years, this has been the vision of our founder, Chase Clark & team.

As a recent college graduate herself, it’s our honor to celebrate her unwavering commitment, alongside our incredible team and partners, as we approach a remarkable milestone as an organization.

Chase’s Chance, Inc. has donated nearly $500,000 in scholarships, sponsorships, and essential goods donated to students, community (both locally & internationally) & the impact doesn’t stop there. Under Chase’s direction our org has impacted classrooms, student lunch balances, libraries, accessibility to food resources and has ensured that students had the resources to take on new experiences.
