Nelson is a dad.
3 1/2 weeks before Christmas, when ICE told Nelson Pinos to deport and leave his family, Nelson made the difficult choice to go into sanctuary instead.
Sanctuary is a refuge. It’s a place of worship, a place that ICE has kind of agreed is “safe,” a place that ICE is not likely to bang the door down in the middle of the night.
In Nelson’s case, it’s a brick building in downtown New Haven facing the green. Nelson is “parked” in the old pastor’s office. He’s got a box spring and mattress and a nightstand. His door locks. He’s free to go downstairs to the fellowship hall or up to the sanctuary. That’s all for freedom.
This page is to keep up to date with Nelson, and to let him know we’re thinking of him. It’s a tough choice to go in to “sanctuary.” It’s just a little easier knowing your community has your back.
