Silent Springs, Windswept Seas: Rachel Carson's Environmental Vision
On view through October 4, 2026
Beinecke Library Mezzanine
Yale University

“Silent Springs, Windswept Seas” explores Rachel Carson’s career, traces the influences of earlier thinkers on her life and writing, and delves into the social and cultural realities of her time. It also examines her impact on other writers and locates Carson’s work in relation to later social movements, such as those fighting for labor rights and environmental justice.

Presenting nearly 100 objects—including handwritten manuscripts of her famous Sea Trilogy, photographs, previously unpublished personal letters, and various notebooks—the exhibition introduces viewers to Carson’s life and legacy and invites a fresh consideration of her cause today.

"Why so many forms?
Why not just that one
hydrogen atom?

The creator goes off
on one wild, specific
tangent after another,
or millions simultaneously,
with an exuberance
that would seem to be
unwarranted, and with
an abandoned energy sprung
from an unfathomable font.

What is going on here?
The point of the dragonfly’s
terrible lip, the giant water bug,
birdsong, or the beautiful dazzle
and flash of sunlighted minnows,
is not that it all fits together
like clockwork – for it doesn’t,
particularly, not even inside
the goldfish bowl – but that
it all flows so freely and wild,
like the creek, that it all surges
in such a free, fringed tangle.

Freedom is the world’s water
and weather, the world’s nourishment
freely given, its soil and sap:
and the creator loves pizzazz."

"The analysis suggests there are either two types of dark matter or the presence of an entirely new type of particle affecting the innermost, densest pockets of galaxy clusters — the universe’s largest collections of galaxies held together by dark matter."

Yale astrophysicist Priyamvada Natarajan and her team stress-tested the standard model of cold dark matter and came away with some intriguing new possibilities.

New job posting at The Nature Institute!

Founded in 1998, The Nature Institute is an independent nonprofit institute in upstate New York with a track record for incisive and thoughtful research studies, adult education programs, and publications. The institute serves as a local, national, and international forum for the development and exchange of ideas about an evolution of science and technology in an effort to realign humanity with the natural world.

The work of the institute focuses on the contemporary
development and practice of the scientific approach first described by the German polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and further developed in the work of Rudolf Steiner. Practiced as a delicate empiricism that can lead to intuitive understanding, this phenomenological approach is rooted in a deep respect for the natural world. It recognizes the significance of direct experience in inquiry, a process that includes giving keen attention to forming concepts that grow in dialogue with the phenomena themselves.

The Nature Institute is one of only a handful of institutes world-wide dedicated to a rigorous application and further development of the Goethean method in ongoing scientific research and training. Over the years, the work has resulted in a highly nuanced, constantly evolving understanding of the intimate connection between human consciousness and the phenomenal world. Developing a scientific understanding that reflects this intimacy provides a basis for a sustainable, healthy future.

We are seeking to expand our team. New colleagues joining the institute will work side-by-side with our current staff and with each other on projects and administrative tasks forming a team able to take the work of the institute into the future. We want to ensure that the core intention of developing and practicing Goethean phenomenology remains at the foundation of the Institute’s work, while recognizing that the new team will bring this intention to expression in its own way.

Currently we are offering a full-time, in-person position for a researcher/educator with a background in the life sciences. Early career individuals are encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate will have:
• A graduate degree in the life sciences (e.g. botany, zoology, environmental science, ecology)
• Interest in conducting non-reductionist, phenomena-based scientific research and the desire to facilitate a
paradigm shift in the life sciences
• Enough familiarity with the work of The Nature Institute to feel an inner alignment with its goals and
aspirations
• Experience in both teaching and research, especially in developing and implementing observation-based,
field research projects
• The ability to work within a team
• Requisite writing and computer skills
Compensation commensurate with experience. Start date flexible.

Application: To apply, please email the following to [email protected]: (1) cover letter, (2) resume/CV,
(3) a short (not more than 1000 words) description of experiences in your education/research that have been
instrumental in your decision to apply for this position, and (4) contact information for three professional and/or
academic references.

How can a larger Universe Story inspire the flourishing of ecological communities?

Yesterday, Mary Evelyn Tucker, John Grim, and Sam King traveled to Hawthorne Valley in Ghent, New York to offer a film screening of Journey of the Universe.

Hawthorne Valley is a place to rediscover one’s connection to nature, to how our food is grown, and to ourselves as participants in a dynamic social and natural ecosystem. Through active food production, educational programs for children and adults, ongoing social and scientific research, and the cultivation of a vibrant artistic community, Hawthorne Valley pursues a modern way of living embedded deeply in the natural world. Its work emphasizes the social, ecological, and economic importance of agriculture in our daily lives.

After absorbing the film, participants reflected on its profound implications for regenerative agriculture, conservation, climate resilience, and the emergence of an Ecological Civilization.

Upcoming event on Thursday evening!

THE THOMAS BERRY FORUM
FOR ECOLOGICAL DIALOGUE AND ACTION
May 21, 2026 | 7 pm EST

This month we turn our attention to Berry's challenge to the four foundational institutions that must be reformed if we are to have a viable future on Planet Earth. In his comprehensive opus, The Great Work: Our Way into the Future, he identifies four establishments that must transition from a human-centered ("patriarchal") to an Earth-centered ("ecozoic") era.

The Berry Forum is pleased to welcome Missy Lahren - a pioneer who is working to revise the practice of law toward an ecozoic extension of rights to all members of the Earth community. Join us to hear of her work among a new generation of lawyers working to protect the diversity of subjects of our living world in order to heal the "radical discontinuity between the nonhuman and the human modes of being, with all the rights and all inherent values given to the human."
