Circa 1913: Dr. Edward Hume and Dr. YAN Fuqing—the first Chinese graduate of Yale Medical School—meet with officials in Hunan.

Together, they co-founded Xiangya Hospital and Medical School, a legacy of medical excellence and international cooperation that continues to thrive 120 years later.

Phantom Lines (May 23-June 14 Weekends Only)

Visit Phantom Lines, an installation by the artists in Yale-China’s Arts Lab, at New Haven’s International Festival of Arts & Ideas, from May 23-June 14. In the exhibition, artists Shellie Zhang, Joy Li, and Amy Fang offer a meditation on silk as a metaphor, following its shifting presence across bodies, images, and global contexts. Working largely through material substitution and transformation, the artists reflect on how the visual, cultural, and bodily associations of silk continue to persist and evolve. Phantom Lines traces how silk’s histories remain present within the ways it is perceived, imagined, and encountered today.

Note: The installation will be open to the public from 12PM–4PM during the listed days, however, we encourage advance registration to help ensure a comfortable and accessible experience for everyone. Visit https://www.artidea.org/PhantomLines for more information.

How do you make learning a new language unforgettable? For Chinese Teaching Fellow LI Yu (Leah), the answer was in the music room!

By blending a simple "Ni Hao" song with instruments and a little help from the music teacher, Leah turned a second-grade Chinese lesson into a rhythmic celebration of language and sound.

Meet the visionaries: Brownell Gage (front left), Arthur Williams (front right), and Lawrence Thurston (back right) as recent Yale graduates in 1898.

By 1901, their spark of an idea grew into a 125-year legacy of friendship and education.

Honor the legacy by sharing your story: https://woobox.com/rqryzd
