Save the date: TONIGHT Tuesday 10/4/22 at 6pm Join us at Hillhouse High School in
What: Three times in eight years the U.S. Department of Education is overhauling its policy on how school districts should manage student discipline.
This development should matter to all Connecticut public school parents, especially Black and Brown children, who deal with disproportionate suspensions and expulsions, as early as age five.
Why does this family talk tonight matter? Because our school districts are grappling with what is dubbed the pandemic effect in schools as schools try to address increased school fights and classroom disruptions.
What is a family or school to do? Join CT parents, New Haven Public Schools, students, and community for “family dinner and real talk.” State Representative Robyn Porter of the Juvenile Justice Policy Oversight Committee (JJPOC), Gwen Samuel of CT Parents Union, Dr. Surajit Khanna of the national Returning Youth post incarceration initiative and Professional Boxer Jimmy “Quiet Storm” join in the fight to help keep all kids safe so they can learn. In addition, we have Heather Malloy Davis of Indigo Station who works with I-A.C.E. Indigo Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurs. She creates workforce development opportunities for at-risk youth in the film and digital movie industry. Let us work smarter, more innovative and strategic to reach our youth BEFORE they hit the Juvenile system.
