New Haven Legal Assistance Association (NHLAA) is seeking a dedicated attorney to join our high-impact Housing Unit. We are looking for a candidate with a deep passion for public interest law and social justice, and someone ready to work to prevent eviction and homelessness alongside communities burdened by systemic barriers to housing stability.

The Role:

— Direct Representation: Represent tenants in summary process eviction cases, court hearings, and negotiated settlements.
— Systemic Advocacy: Work with the NHLAA team and community groups to resolve broad issues within the eviction process.
— Holistic Support: Collaborate with local social service providers to ensure comprehensive support for our clients.

The Opportunity: In addition to litigation, this position offers the chance to work closely with community organizations to change the culture of the courts. You will be part of a growing cohort dedicated to transforming landlord-tenant relations in Connecticut over the coming years.

At this year's , we raised $16,203 from 68 donors, making this one of the highest totals we have received, and we're incredibly thankful for this. Every gift strengthens our ability to stand alongside our neighbors who need a legal advocate in their corner.

We're especially grateful to the board members and fundraisers who rallied their networks on our behalf: Jenny Chou, Kristen Zaehringer, Maggie Castinado, Jeff Hellman, and Matthew Tanico.

We also extend our deepest thanks to two anonymous donors whose remarkable gifts of $5,000 and $2,500 lifted us toward our goal, and to the Black Futures Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven for their generous matching donation of $2,000 in support of our work.

Thank you all for believing in this work and in the clients and families we serve.

Executive Director Alexis Smith joined the ICE and Eyes panel to talk directly about how ICE enforcement affects people in Connecticut who are trying to get legal help.

When community members fear detention or deportation, they put off getting the legal assistance and medical care they need, turning preventable situations into crises for families, workers, and entire neighborhoods.

Understanding these realities is how we push for policies that protect everyone and make sure no one in Connecticut has to choose between staying safe and getting help.

Josh Goodbaum has seen firsthand what happens when people can't access legal help. As an employment lawyer and Vice President of NHLAA's Board, he knows the gap between who needs legal representation and who gets it is real and urgent.

"When we're talking about secure housing, immigration status, or freedom from domestic violence, the need for legal representation is no less urgent."

That's why Josh gives and why he serves.

Paul Bryan Jr. was homeless before he got his apartment at Curtis Cofield Estates. Now he is fighting to keep it.

Bryan is one of 22 tenants who received eviction notices after being told by their landlord they owed $0 in rent, only to find out that rent calculations had changed without any notification. Attorneys in NHLAA's housing unit, led by Litigation Director Shelley White, have been in court fighting for these tenants every step of the way.

Our position is clear. These tenants should not lose their homes because of the landlord's mismanagement.

Legal aid isn't just about today's cases. It's about building something that lasts.

Last month, NHLAA's Board of Directors came together for a retreat to think seriously about the future: what legal aid means in Connecticut, where NHLAA is headed, and how we keep showing up for the people who need us most.
