🔬It's time for our first Science in the News talk! Join us as we dive into the science of mosquito-borne illnesses! 🦟

Did you know that mosquitoes are the world’s deadliest animal, causing over 700,000 deaths every year? As vectors for diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika, they pose an unmatched threat to human health. Join us in this month’s Science in the News talk where Yale scientists Mara Kushelman, Sandra Sandria, and Cristina Arnes Sanz talk about how advancements in science and technology can be harnessed to confront the challenges posed by mosquito-borne illnesses. During this talk, we will highlight the impacts of climate change on insect spread, and dive into the past and the future of science-based methods to eradicate or control mosquito-borne diseases.

Feb 16th 6pm - Q-House
Feb 22nd 6:30pm - Essex Library
Feb 26 6pm - Danbury Library (Zoom)

Science is happening in unexpected ways all around you—even in the kitchen! For example, we tend to think radiation as something far away from the average person, but did you know that you can find tiny amounts of radiation almost anywhere you look? Bananas are slightly radioactive! They contain Potassium, and a trace amount of the potassium on Earth is radioactive. This means that some of the potassium in bananas is radioactive! Don't worry though, this kind of radiation is totally normal and not something you need to worry about.

This is Samantha baking a yummy dessert. She studies particle physics, and she’ll tell you all about these radioactive bananas and more in Tuesday’s talk, Science in the Kitchen: Baking, Beer, and Bananas! Register below!
