The New Haven PAUSE Project

The New Haven PAUSE Project Homeless health advocacy organization that provides foot care and footwear to the homeless of New Haven, CT, as a quality of life and health improvement.

As a rising second-year student at the Yale School of Public Health, Ashton Gores was deeply moved by an experience that she had while working as a coordinator at the Neighborhood Health Project one rainy Saturday morning in July. The Neighborhood Health Project (NHP) is a free health screening clinic operated by students from the Yale Health Professional Schools that runs every Saturday morning i

n the basement of the Episcopal Church of St. Paul & St. James from 9-10:30 AM. NHP is setup alongside Loaves & Fishes, the largest weekend food pantry and clothes closet available to the homeless and less fortunate of New Haven, Connecticut, serving nearly 400 persons each Saturday. In July 2017, a homeless man, badly beaten after sleeping in a bus stop that he preferred to local shelters asked Ashton to look at his feet before setting out to walk to the hospital due to the limited treatment capacity of NHP. He was insistent on walking because of an unpleasant past experience in which he lost a portion of one of his fingers in an ambulance, and he refused to take a taxi. His shoes, far too large, created perfect irritation with damp socks from recent rain. He likely had not taken his socks and shoes off for weeks to months. His feet were badly infected and the only available solution was to offer a clean pair of socks from the clothes closet. When Ashton went to the back of Loaves & Fishes, however, she was shook to find that the clothes closet that serves 400, had only 12 socks. Not 12 pairs of socks, 12 individual socks. As she left that day, she left heartbroken; yet, determined to do more. Since that day in July, Ashton has set out on a mission to bring together members of both the Yale and New Haven communities to provide footwear and foot care to the homeless and less fortunate of New Haven. The New Haven PAUSE Project (Poverty Alleviation through Unity, Sustainability, and Empowerment), formerly the New Haven PAWS Project, seeks to provide footwear and podiatric care to those experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty in New Haven. The PAUSE Project engages the greater Yale community in events centered around foot health, including foot washing services and shoe, sock, and hygiene kit giveaways.
PAUSE conducts frequent foot washing and hygiene giveaways at The Episcopal Church of St. Paul and St. James (57 Olive St.) during Sunrise Café’s morning hours (a food kitchen coordinated in collaboration with Liberty Community Services) between 7:00am - 8:00am, and in collaboration with Loaves and Fishes/Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) (8:30am, Saturdays).

Loaves & Fishes of New Haven, one of PAUSE's partners, is part of The Great Give—a 36-hour community-wide giving event to support local nonprofits. As their largest annual fundraiser, your gift helps them continue providing fresh food, free clothing, and a compassionate connection to hundreds of neighbors each week. Give any time from now through May 7 at 8 pm to help them reach their $50,000 goal in celebration of 40+ years of service.

Here is a link to their campaign: https://www.thegreatgive.org/organizations/loaves-and-fishes-new-haven

Every gift tells our neighbors: “You matter.”

“I feel seen and respected here, not just like another number.”

“It’s not just the food, it’s knowing someone cares.”

“Loaves and Fishes has always been a safe and welcoming space where I know I’ll get the help I need.”

“It really alleviates some of the burden.”

These words come from some of their 500 guests they see weekly for groceries and 100 who come weekly for clothing.

Today, they're facing a growing challenge: keeping their shelves stocked, especially with essential proteins and having seasonally appropriate clothing. Supply chain disruptions, limited food supplier availability, and rising need have created a real gap—and for our neighbors, that gap means less food on the table.

They need your support now more than ever to continue feeding our community with care and dignity.

Every dollar counts in the Great Give and unlocks 1-to-1 matching funds.

I’m ready to support Loaves and Fishes on May 6, 2026 during The Great Give. Learn more about Loaves and Fishes and all the other organizations participating in The Great Give.
