Negligent and absentee landlords are now on notice: if you leave your property blighted and as an unsafe, unsightly eyesore in our neighborhoods, there are now much stiffer fines to pay.

I was proud to sign into law a new ordinance that will strengthen the city’s ability to combat blighted properties by increasing municipal fines for blight and property maintenance violations from $100 per day to up to $1,000 per day, the maximum penalty allowable by state statute.

The vast majority of landlords maintain and care for their properties and do right by their tenants β€” but for those who don’t, we will hold you accountable.

Thank you to the Board of Alders for their unanimous support of this new law, our State Delegation for providing us with these new enforcement tools, and and to the Livable City Initiative team who work every day to help ensure our residents are living in safe, healthy and well-maintained homes.
