Meet Mithara Kaluarachchi, a SAAPS Fellow from the University of Notre Dame!

Mithara is a Hesburgh-Yusko Scholar at the University of Notre Dame double majoring in Neuroscience and Philosophy with a minor in Gender Studies. Her primary area of academic focus is understanding the disparities in mental illness and psychiatric healthcare in developing nations and low-income communities. Mithara is also passionate about and holds leadership positions in issues relating to eating disorders, gun violence, women’s rights, mental health on college campuses, and undergraduate research. When it comes to community organizing and policy work, Mithara is particularly interested in understanding how gender-based violence and racial differences play a role in long-term trauma-rooted mental health issues and what systems and resources can be put in place to aid victims. During the summer of 2019, Mithara traveled to Liverpool, United Kingdom, where she worked directly with minority women who have experienced honor-based abuse and collaborated with MPs, attorneys, and nonprofits to provide resources to their clients.

In "Aspire to Serve? Indian Americans and the Army," Gayatri Balasubramanian reflects on her experience as an ROTC member, drawing on her conversations with a host of diverse Army members. Read the piece at saaps.org/balasubramanian!

Balasubramanian writes: “ROTC was uncharted territory for both my family and me because we knew no one in our immediate circle who had served. Being a Midwesterner of Indian descent, military service was just not common. I grew up in a quintessential American suburb where the civil-military divide was more than evident.”

Meet Neel Pai, a SAAPS Fellow from Vanderbilt University!

Neel currently studies Economics and Political Science. He was born and raised in Naperville, Illinois, a suburb outside of Chicago, and attended Neuqua Valley High School. He wanted to join SAAPS to get connected with the larger South Asian public service community (since they're not particularly well-represented in the South). He's already been blown away by the amazing SAAPS community, and is really excited to see how we can collectively make a positive impact in the public sphere in the years to come!

In "Pannirendu Varisham Vanavaasam," Nivedhitha Sivakumar grapples with the inevitable loss of cultural traditions and knowledge experienced as members of the diaspora. Read the piece at saaps.org/sivakumar!

Sivakumar writes: “I’m scared that my well of knowledge is so shallow that it will dry up too quickly when it comes my time to pass it on. As eager as I am to keep giving, there won’t be more than I know to give — and what I have to give is a mere handful of knowledge in a whole universe of customs, traditions, and stories.”
