We had a great Urban Resources Initiative URI community greenspace workday yesterday in Kensington Playground!
We weeded garden beds, refilled the bird feeders, planted bearded irises, mulched and weeded, then mulched and weeded some more!
Fun fact: bearded irises should be dug up and divided every five years or so to prevent overcrowding, which can dramatically reduce flowering.
The park is especially lovely this time of year, with dappled sunlight filtering through the tree canopy and serviceberry bushes heavy with red berries that the birds love to eat.
Thank you to Anh, Angie, Ashley, and Olivia for spending part of their day improving Kensington Playground. Special thanks to Margaret, our URI Urban Forester, for supplying the mulch, tools, and expertise that made the workday possible. And thank you to Kathy for generously sharing extra bearded irises from her garden so they could beautify our park.
Reminder: We work Saturday’s 10:30 to 12:30 through the end of July - except July 4th weekend. Everyone is welcome, including kids! No experience needed. Tools, gloves, and light refreshments provided. We hope you’ll join us!
