We are celebrating the 2026 summer camp season
by introducing our "Alumni of the Month" initiative!

To get the proverbial ball rolling, allow us to introduce our selection for July - Dave Bernard!

We had a chance to sit down with Dave to try to get inside his head a bit, and to learn about what makes him so passionate about Camp Workcoeman. Check out his responses below:

Q: What made you want to work on camp staff?

A: "The camp food. Definitely the camp food... after a restless night in a raccoon-infested cabin, there is nothing more reliable than camp eggs, potatoes and some sort of colored juice product that is supposed to taste like morning!"

Q: Care to share a lasting summer camp staff memory?

A: "Visiting the health lodge at midnight with scouts who "forgot" their nighttime medications. Seeing the joy on the nurse's face more than enhanced my already robust staff salary!"

Q: What is your favorite flavor of Slushy from the trading post?

"Cherry. Definitely my favorite. Also Blue Raspberry. That's my favorite too. Also Grape. They're all favorites. Definitely. All favorites...also Lemon-Lime. That's another favorite. But if I had to pick one it's Watermelon. 100%. Definitely. Cherry."

Q: Okay...well how about your favorite flavor of ice cream?

A: "Oh that's easy...Rocky Road. But it has nothing to do with the chocolate or marshmallows - it reminds me of all the fun times driving a busted up camp vehicle through the outer loop!"

Q: Last question - you're referred to as "Pirate Dave" in some circles. Care to explain?

A: "Well, to be fair, I've been referred to as a certain kind of Pirate in many walks of life"

With the summer season fast approaching, we'd like to take a moment to remind you that there are many great programs taking place at Camp Workcoeman this Spring!!

April 11 is our Crafts and Trades merit badge day, April 25 is our Cub Scout Covered Wagon Derby, and May 17-19 is the Semiquincentennial Camporee celebrating the 250th Anniversary of American Independence 🇺🇸 which will likely be the largest event ever in the history of Camp Workcoeman!

This is a great time to remind our scouting families that Alumni Association camperships are not limited to just our summertime programs - we want to make sure that these Spring program opportunities are available for all who want to participate.

If your scout (or if you know of a scout in your unit) wants to join us for a legendary Scouting experience but the cost of participating may be a barrier, please send us a direct message on this platform - we would love to work with you to ensure that all scouts who want to attend Camp Workcoeman are able to! All inquiries will remain confidential and you will be contacted directly by a member of our association's executive board.

Here's to a great Spring scouting season!

The Camp Workcoeman Alumni Association is honored to have received a donation in memory of long-time Scouter Jim Byrd. Throughout his longtime tenure in scouting, Mr. Byrd shared a love of cooking, fellowship and friendship with all of those he worked with. We look forward to carrying on these virtues to the next generation of scouts who will be able to attend Camp Workcoeman!

Our camp community is heartbroken to share that we have lost one of our own. Nurse Wanda was truly an "Alumni" as she served our camp and the scouting community for many years. She was truly one of a kind, and left an indelible mark on the camp community that we have today.

The Camp Workcoeman Alumni Association is beyond appreciative that her family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation in Wanda's memory might consider making a contribution to our organization to ensure that the next generation of scouts can enjoy all that Camp Workcoeman has to offer.

Should you wish to make a contribution you can do so via the following link:

On behalf of all of us at the Camp Workcoeman Alumni Association, thank you for supporting our scouting families. And thank you Wanda for all that you gave to the Scouting movement.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Wanda McKeon, RN. Wanda served as the camp nurse at Camp Workcoeman from 1996 to 2004 and was a dedicated volunteer in our Scouting community. She served as a Den Leader with Pack 1 and as a Committee Member and Merit Badge Counselor with Troop 1 in Torrington, where her sons, Connor and Michael, both earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Wanda’s professionalism as a healthcare provider and her tireless dedication to Scouting and Camp Workcoeman earned her the genuine respect of countless Scouts and Scouters she met along the Scouting trail. Anyone who was part of camp during that time remembers “Nurse Wanda,” and her memory will forever bring a smile to us all.

Wanda’s obituary can be found via the link in the comments. We are honored that her family has requested donations in her memory be made to the Camp Workcoeman Alumni Association to help ensure all Scouts can attend camp programs. Information on how to donate is included in the obituary.
