911memorialtrail The 9/11 Trail is a 1,500-mile multi-use route that links the three locations impacted by 9/11/01.

The September 11th National Memorial Trail will be a tribute to all those who perished, and the heroic first responders, on September 11, 2001 in America’s single worst terrorist attack. The trail will serve as a symbol of the resiliency and character of the communities in which the victims and their families lived and worked. On that fateful day, nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commerc

ial aircraft, crashing two aircraft into New York City’s World Trade Center Twin Towers; another aircraft plunged into the Pentagon, and the heroic passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 stopped a fourth airliner from striking the nation’s capitol by forcing it to crash land in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Several days later, just blocks from the Pentagon and minutes from our Nations’ Capitol, conservation and recreation leaders from across the country convened to attend the “Mid-Atlantic Governors Conference on Greenways, Blueways and Green Infrastructure” at a nearby hotel less than a half-mile from the Pentagon. In the planning stage for nearly a year, it was decided that the conference should go on in the spirit that the terrorists would not disrupt our daily lives. The conference was a rousing success; the only dilemma being that those conference members planning to travel by air from across the country and abroad were prohibited from attending due to the restrictions on air travel. At the concluding forum one of the conference organizers presented the audience with the vision of establishing a multi-use trail as a perpetual remembrance of those heroes lost on that fateful day. The trail route would start from the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia proceeding to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, then across to New York City and back down to the Pentagon. It would be called the September 11th National Memorial Trail. The conference participants’ response was exciting and the concept moved forward. On September 11, 2001, our nation made a promise to Never Forget.
But what about the new generation that wasn't here yet to remember?

For many, the day lives vividly in their minds, with a clear memory of where they were when they heard the news. For younger generations, understanding 9/11 begins with shared history and a retelling of the day. The Alliance works tirelessly to ensure the heroes’ names, sacrifices, and legacies live on so that all future generations remember.

The article below offers guidance on how to talk about 9/11 with children — explaining what happened honestly, answering tough questions, and helping them process the emotions that come with the topic. Learn more below!

Students today have no memory of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, so this year's anniversary poses unique challenges for educators and caregivers trying to explain what happened and why.

Great news for trails and public spaces!

This month, Jersey City took a monumental step in approving a plan to preserve and repurpose the 6th Street Embankment as a public green space and trail corridor. This will make a connection through Jersey City, almost to the waterfront, for both the East Coast Greenway Alliance and the 9/11 National Memorial Trail!

Learn more about this decades-long effort with the link below:

The Jersey City Council passes two ordinances up for 2nd reading to settle the 20-plus year legal battle over the 6th Street Embankment.
