We're excited to announce the screening of “The Middle of Everywhere,” Saturday June 27th, in the very town that this documentary film is about - New Cuyama. Filmmakers Zoe and Ellie will attend; hope you can join in person at Blue Sky Center to watch under the stars!

From Zoe and Ellie: New Cuyama is a place that is dear to our hearts and it’s so special to be able to celebrate and to finally screen the film there, exactly three years after the project began! If you’re somewhat close, we encourage you to come to the screening! If you’re looking to make a little trip out of it, you could book a stay at the Blue Sky Center () in one of their glamping huts or book a room at the Cuyama Buckhorn hotel ().

This film began as part of Blue Sky Center's Outpost Studio Program, which provides space and time for artists and creative professionals for all disciplines. Find out more at https://www.blueskycenter.org/outpost

We hope to see you there for a special viewing under the starry night sky ✨

The last couple of weeks, we’ve had the honor of welcoming and hosting our newest Cuyama Action Fellows, Raúl Ayala () and artist team Brendan Mac Corgarry () and Jess Keller, to Blue Sky Center and the Cuyama Valley.

Raúl Ayala (he/him)  is an artist and educator specializing in muralism and public interventions that foster community engagement. His practice, spanning large-scale paintings, site-specific installations, and collective rituals, centers on decolonial pedagogy and territorial reclamation. Currently a drawing and painting lecturer at Rutgers University, Ayala works between New York and Ecuador, utilizing co-creative processes to shape collective narratives and reclaim the sanctuary of public space.

Brendan Mac Corgarry (he/him) is a fisherman, hunter, naturalist, builder, agriculturalist, chef, and artist. Brendan brings over twenty years of experience facilitating youth and adult education in land-based learning spaces. Jess Keller (she/her) comes from a background in public health, nutrition, and agriculture. Her work bridges food systems, environmental regeneration, and community wellness. Brendan and Jess have been living and working here in Cuyama Valley for a combined 15 years.

This is the first of two two-week stays at Blue Sky Center for the Fellows. This initial visit has focused on connecting the Fellows with the community and planning for their second visit in the fall. When the fellows return to Cuyama later this year, they will implement their community-led art projects in Cuyama. Come by Blue Sky Center tonight 6:30pm-7:30pm to learn more about each artists’ practice and their proposed projects.

The Cuyama Action Fellowship is generously supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts ().

On April 20th in Sacramento, we’re excited to be part of the “Rural Futures” breakout session for the CA Arts & Culture Summit! Moderated by Yue Nakayama, Arts Director, Blue Sky Center , featuring panelists: Ash Hanson, Creative Executive Officer, Department of Public Transformation ; Cara Goger, Executive Director, Mariposa County Arts Council @‌mariposaarts; Jack Forinash, Executive Director, Blue Sky Center ; Patricia Ann Zamora (PAZ), Founder/Director, 7GEN ArtHouse @‌pazpatr. This facilitated conversation brings together rural and tribal arts workers, culture bearers, and advocates to connect, share learning, and develop a collective strategy.

While nearly every county in California includes rural communities, our state’s urban-normative frameworks often overlook the innovation, interdisciplinarity, and civic leadership emerging from “lowercase a” arts organizations. Across political and socioeconomic contexts, this work is inclusive, place-based, and deeply connected to community wellbeing, yet only 8% of state arts funding reaches rural organizations.

Register for this breakout session to build new relationships and learn from one another’s creative approaches to funding, collaboration, and community engagement at the CA Arts & Culture Summit, taking place April 19–20. Get your tickets here: https://bit.ly/cfta-summit26
