Blue Sky Center is a 501(c)(3) org envisioning a resilient, thriving, and inclusive Cuyama Valley.

BLUE SKY CENTER is a 501c3 rural impact center located in the high-desert region of the Central Coast- the Cuyama Valley - and is situated on twenty-five acres of mid century industrial-commercial space and three hundred acres of alluvial farmland. On a recent visit to the Cuyama Valley, Congressman Salud Carbajal () met with the staff of Blue Sky Center. The discussion focused on discerning and sharing what realities and opportunities exist in the Cuyama Valley for investments, particularly in this case federal investments such as from USDA (), the National Endowment for the Arts (), and AmeriCorps (). The meeting highlighted our creative community engagement methods that lead with community voices and connect neighbors to neighbors.

During their time in New Cuyama, Congressman Carbajal and his team also visited with folks at the elementary school, high school, the county fire station, the county pool, the Family Resource Center, and the Community Health Centers. Rumor has it they also grabbed some burgers at The Burger Barn for lunch!

Earlier this month, members of the Jardines Victoria Group were invited to tour the family-owned Riverside Lavender Ranch, situated in the unique high desert landscape of Cuyama. Lavender is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in low-water conditions, making it especially well-suited for Cuyama's arid environment.

The tour was led by Maria Arrieta, who explained the various types of lavender cultivated on the ranch. These included culinary lavender, used for teas and baked goods, and non-culinary lavender, utilized in products such as lotions, candles, and lip balms. Maria highlighted the many benefits of lavender and discussed how it flourishes in the Cuyama Valley.

She guided the guests through the hand-harvesting process, from cutting to drying, and allowed them to pick and harvest their own fresh bouquets. Attendees enjoyed freshly harvested lavender bouquets, along with lavender lemonade and baked goods made from the organic lavender grown on the ranch. Members of Jardines Victoria are always eager to learn more about organic growing practices and how local ranches implement them in the Cuyama Valley.

Last fall, with the support of an Uplift Catalyst Grant, we worked closely with the Cuyama Joint Unified School District to install two new state-of-the-art computer labs for students and future opportunities for adult continuing education. Both labs have proven to be invaluable to the education of the students in our community. Because of these computer labs, students are able to utilize essential computer programs, get support on their assignments, and access to reliable internet.

Earlier this summer Jardines Victoria hosted a plant giveaway event where community members could pick up different plants to add to their home gardens. Some of the plants for giveaway included melon, cucumber, and tomato. Garlic, grown by Jardines Victoria, was also for sale. Community members who joined the event were treated to delicious agua fresca.

Jardines Victoria was established in 2020 in response to food insecurity brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the years, funds from Santa Barbara Foundation, the Santa Barbara County Food Action Network, the Fund for Santa Barbara, and a Transformative Climate Communities grant has enabled Jardines Victoria to install raised bed gardens, supply planter materials, seeds, and starter plants, and host workshops for families in our community. Now in its sixth year, Jardines Victoria currently serves 85 families in the Cuyama Valley.

On Saturday, May 16, more than 100 community members came together for Rec Hallipalooza, a performance celebrating creativity, connection, and community spirit. The performance was led by Ash Hanson and Alex Barreto-Hathaway of PlaceBase Productions. Cast, crew, and audience members traveled through five locations, beginning at Memorial Field and making their way to the lawnmower track and horseshoes, the skate park, the “Soccer Field of Dreams,” and finally the Rec Hall.

Along the journey, audience members became part of the experience, voting for their favorite lawnmower race competitor, cheering on the winning Cuyama soccer team, and joining the parade through song and celebration. The festivities concluded with a joyful Parranda to the Rec Hall, where attendees were introduced to Mariflor, the Rec Hall’s larger-than-life persona and giant puppet. The day ended with a shared outdoor lunch for 60 cast members, crew, and families, creating a memorable celebration of the people, places, and stories that make Cuyama special.

Rec Hallipalooza was presented by Blue Sky Center, Cuyama Valley Recreation District, and Ash and Alex of PlaceBase Productions. Funding for Rec Hallipalooza was made possible by an grant.
