MAJOR TRAFFIC / HAZMAT INCIDENT — INTERSTATE 83

Newberry Township Fire Department and multiple mutual-aid agencies are currently operating on Interstate 83 for a significant hazardous-materials incident involving a tractor-trailer with a leaking product.

Interstate 83 is currently CLOSED in BOTH directions between the Yocumtown and Newberrytown exits. Motorists should avoid the area and expect significant delays while crews continue working to contain and mitigate the incident.

Multiple fire departments, hazardous-materials personnel, State Police, PennDot and other supporting resources are working together on scene. A specialized cleanup contractor has also been requested and crews are awaiting their arrival.

At this time, the public should avoid the immediate incident area and obey all roadway closures. Any additional public-safety instructions will be communicated if they become necessary.

There is currently no estimated time for Interstate 83 to reopen.

Please use an alternate route and allow emergency crews room to operate.

Recap! Company 69 has responded to numerous structural incidents over the week:

- August 22nd: 1400blk of High Street, East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County. 1st alarm house fire. Rescue 69

- September 1st: 500blk of Erb Lane, East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County. 1st alarm house fire. Rescue 69.

- September 1st: School House Lane, Fairview Twp, York County. House fire WFD. Engine and Tower 69.

- September 2nd: B’nai B’Rith Apartments, City of Harrisburg. 1st alarm smoke throughout a highrise. Rescue 69.

The company has taken in additional runs for medicals, fire alarms, and reported fires in between!

🔥House Fire 🔥

Overnight the Engine & Tower ran a working house fire in Fairview Twp. The Engine Co supplied water while the crew went forward working with Engine 68-1 for suppression and opening up. Tower 69 arrived and worked with initial crews opening up vaulted ceilings and checking the second floor . Crews were committed roughly 2 hours .

🔥 Sutphen Pre-Con 🚨

Yesterday our committee completed pre con of the new tower at Sutphen’s Dublin Ohio location. The committee worked alongside a knowledgeable team from Sutphen that Included our Salesman , Project Manager’s & Engineers. Our team was able to see many examples of what the manufacturer has to offer to include all the different build stages of Aerial Apparatus . This helped us gather a strong understanding from which we’re confident the end result will be just what we’re looking for .

🌪️ Rescue Responds to Tornado Damage 🌪️

Rescue 69 supplemented by ALS Squad 69 responded to assist York County ATR with a school that was hit by a Tornado.

Southeast York County was hit with significant storm damage from rain and wind. A tornado struck the area of East York High School causing significant damage to the school.

Rescue 69 arrived and reported to staging before being assigned to conduct secondary searches and continued damage assessments of the building.

Rescue 69 was on scene for approximately 1.5 hours before being released.

We are proud to announce that DLA New Cumberland Fire and Emergency Services has successfully achieved reaccreditation for its 4th cycle through the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI).

This internationally recognized designation is awarded only after an extensive process of self-assessment, peer review, and verification. It requires the preparation of comprehensive documentation demonstrating continuous quality improvement across a full five-year period. The process evaluates the agency against rigorous standards spanning governance and administration, assessment and planning, goals and objectives, financial resources, community risk reduction, physical and human resources, training and competency, essential resources, external relationships, and health and safety — with particular emphasis on core competencies that must be fully met.

This achievement reflects the dedication of every member of the department and the strong partnership between labor and management. The collaborative effort to collect data, document performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement meaningful change has been essential to maintaining this high standard of excellence.

Accreditation is not a one-time award — it is a commitment to ongoing improvement in the service we provide to the Defense Logistics Agency, the installation, and our surrounding communities. We thank everyone who contributed their time and expertise throughout this cycle.
