We’re delighted to share the creative work of Girl Scout Troop 40124 of Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson, Inc.

The Scouts created these models to show ways we can make our homes safer and more welcoming for birds—including bird-safe glass and birdhouses incorporated directly into a home. Their imaginative design symbolizes how people can make room for birds where we live.

Across New York, tidal marsh restoration is helping birds, wildlife, and coastal communities. Restoration often includes rebuilding natural marsh elevations and re-establishing native marsh grasses such as smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) and saltmeadow cordgrass (Spartina patens), which stabilize sediments and provide critical habitat.

While the Long Island projects highlighted here are coastal salt marshes, Piermont Marsh is a brackish tidal marsh, where freshwater from the Hudson mixes with saltwater from the Atlantic. Both are incredibly valuable ecosystems that support birds, improve water quality, and help protect communities from flooding.

It's encouraging to see marsh restoration expanding across New York, and we look forward to more opportunities to protect these remarkable habitats.

🌸 Native Plant Spotlight: Virginia Rose 🌸

Our beautiful native Virginia Rose is more than just a wildflower — it provides valuable habitat for birds and pollinators throughout the season. Its dense, thorny branches help shelter nesting birds, while the flowers attract native bees and butterflies. Later in the year, the rose hips provide food for wildlife.

Small native shrubs like this can make a big difference in creating healthier backyard habitat for birds. 💚🐦

A great local collaboration to reduce bird-window collisions.

Bird-window collisions are a major issue, with hundreds of millions of birds lost each year. But simple solutions like these paracord “BirdSavers” can make a real difference.

This installation at Jamie Surya Yoga Studio in Piermont is a wonderful, visible step forward.
