Keep Rockland Beautiful, Inc.

Keep Rockland Beautiful, Inc. Volunteer organization in Rockland County, NY working to build community & educate the public on cleaning, protecting, beatifying the local environment.

Keep Rockland Beautiful is an environmental not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving Rockland's natural environment. For the past 20 years Keep Rockland Beautiful, a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, has largely focused on environmental education, litter prevention, and waste reduction. Every year Keep Rockland Beautiful orchestrates hundreds of grassroots cleanu

p initiatives and inspires community members from all parts of Rockland, and beyond, to get outside and keep their neighborhoods clean. Our largest campaign, the Great American Cleanup, incorporates thousands of volunteers each spring. In the months of April and May, thousands of volunteers remove tons of trash from Rockland streets, parks, and waterways. In addition to year-round cleanup initiatives, Keep Rockland Beautiful works with various school districts to engage students of all ages. Earth B.E.A.T. (Basic Environmental Awareness Training) provides a hands-on learning experience to younger students (K-8) by incorporating interactive educational activities on local ecology, waste reduction, and energy conservation. Rockland P.L.U.S. (Planning & Land Use for Students) enables high school-aged students to develop and share ideas and visions on real-life planning issues and decisions. These workshops, organized in conjunction with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Rockland Conservation & Service Corps., allow students to learn more about careers in planning as well as their own leadership potential and environmental interests. Our first 20 years have been filled with devotion to our community and commitment to protecting the environment: truly doing what we love. We hope you'll get involved, and be a part of Keep Rockland Beautiful as we continue to push for a more sustainable future.

๐ŸŒŸ Board Member Spotlight: Tim Morales ๐ŸŒŸ

Today, we are proud to shine a spotlight on Tim Morales, a valued member of the Keep Rockland Beautiful Board of Directors.

Since joining KRB, Tim has been a reliable supporter of our mission, consistently stepping up to assist wherever needed. His dedication to community improvement, willingness to volunteer his time, and positive spirit have made him an important part of our team.

Tim has also played a role in supporting our fundraising efforts. Through his relationships with local restaurants, breweries, and businesses, he has helped secure raffle baskets and prizes that have contributed to the success of our fundraising efforts. These contributions help support our environmental programs, community cleanups, and educational initiatives throughout Rockland County.

Tim's generosity, community connections, and commitment to service help strengthen our organization and advance our mission of creating a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Rockland County.

Thank you, Tim, for all you do for Keep Rockland Beautiful and the communities we serve! ๐Ÿ’šโ™ป๏ธ๐ŸŒŽ

Are butterfly bushes bad for butterflies?.....kind of.

Some argue that butterfly bushes are actually bad for butterflies over time because they are an invasive species. Due to their fast reproduction, this plant can spread and s***f out other native shrubs, which provide food for caterpillars. Caterpillars cannot usually feed on butterfly bushes, so butterflies need to lay their eggs on other plants. However, if the butterfly bush has invaded the area and destroyed other plants in its wake, this leaves the butterflies with fewer choices to lay their eggs. As a result, the butterfly population can dramatically decrease in areas where butterfly bushes are prevalent.

If you are trying to attract pollinators to your area and support the butterfly population, try planting native plants that serve as both food to pollinators & caterpillars and support the ecological balance in our area.

Click the link below for a handy, easy to read chart of native northeastern plants from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, a non-profit that supports pollinators among other things.
