Youth leadership is essential to shaping a sustainable future for the Amazon and strengthening ecological and biocultural connectivity across the region.

The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) and the (ASL) Program —financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and led by the World Bank— invite you to review their joint Youth-Led White Paper, “Advancing sustainable development and ecological and biocultural connectivity in the Amazon through youth leadership among Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities and Afrodescendant Peoples.”

Developed by 21 young members of the SPA Youth Advisory Committee and the ASL Youth Group, the White Paper brings together diverse experiences, perspectives, and knowledge from across the Amazon.

🌎 CONFERENCIA INTERNACIONAL, DOS CIENCIAS, UN MISMO LLAMADO: AMAZONÍA EN EMERGENCIA

La Amazonía enfrenta una emergencia. La crisis climática, la deforestación y la expansión de las actividades extractivas amenazan los territorios, los Pueblos Indígenas y los ecosistemas que sostienen la vida.

🌿 Frente a estos desafíos, la ciencia indígena y la ciencia académica se encuentran para dialogar, intercambiar conocimientos y construir respuestas desde la Amazonía.

Este 20 de agosto, Puyo será el punto de encuentro de conferencistas nacionales e internacionales, autoridades y representantes de Pueblos Indígenas, científicos y organizaciones aliadas, en un espacio de diálogo intercultural sobre el presente y futuro de la Amazonía.

⛓️Illegal economies are not isolated crimes — they are a system of connections that fragments the Amazon.

Chapter 2 of the 2025 Amazon Assessment Report, The Disruptive Connectivity of Illegal Economies, examines how illegal gold mining, logging, land grabbing, drug trafficking, and wildlife trafficking are reshaping forests, rivers, territories, and communities across the Amazon Basin.

These interconnected networks undermine biodiversity, climate regulation, food security, public health, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. The chapter argues that addressing these challenges requires coordinated, cross-border action that strengthens governance, protects territorial rights, and supports sustainable socio-bioeconomy alternatives.

🌧️🌎 The Amazon is not just a forest: it is a system of connections that shapes the climate, water, and biodiversity of our entire planet.

Chapter 1 of the 2025 Amazon Assessment Report, "Amazon Connections: From Regional to Global," explores how the Amazon's forests, rivers, atmosphere, and human cultures are deeply interlinked, and what happens when those links are broken.

From the aerial rivers that carry moisture across South America to the Andean-Amazon hydroclimatic system that sustains ecosystems and communities across the continent, the science is clear: what happens in the Amazon does not stay in the Amazon.

Yesterday, SPA Co-Chair Carlos A. Nobre participated in the Aula Magna of the Insper Earthshot Climate Leadership Program, sharing insights on climate science, the Amazon, sustainable development, and the role of leadership in addressing the climate crisis.

During the conversation, Carlos highlighted the work of the Science Panel for the Amazon and emphasized the importance of advancing nature-based solutions and pathways for a sustainable Amazon, while recognizing the need to move beyond fossil fuel expansion in the region.

The event brought together students, professionals, and researchers to reflect on the importance of connecting science, innovation, and collaboration to advance solutions for a sustainable Amazon and a resilient future.

Last Week, SPA Co-Chair Marielos Peña-Claros presented at the "𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗼 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹: 𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗹𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻" (Forest Fire: Science for Decision in Restoration Symposium), organized by the Fundación para la Conservación del Bosque Chiquitano (FCBC), the Gobierno Autónomo Departamental Santa Cruz, and Wageningen University & Research.

Forest fires are increasing in frequency and intensity. These fires are driven by climate change and deforestation, and have severe impacts on human and ecosystem health.

The symposium brought together national and international scientists, firefighters, practitioners, and students to exchange knowledge and discuss solutions.

Marielos presented the 2025 Amazon Assessment Report, "Connectivity of the Amazon for a Living Planet," highlighting the importance of ecological and sociocultural connectivity for conserving Amazonian ecosystems. It is also key to reduce and prevent extreme wildfires (Call to Action 2, Chapter 1), by conserving the lands and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.
