Osanna Chamber Ensemble is excited to announce our upcoming concerts in New York City! Join us in exploring the significant role that Dmitri Bortnyansky in the Orthodox choral tradition that we’ve come to know, pray through,
and love.

Today, too many dismiss Bortnyansky’s compositions as ‘merely’ Italianate Galante artifacts - yet his output is undeniably a cornerstone of Russian Orthodox liturgical singing to this day. As a group equally comfortable in singing Western European as we are Eastern European music, Osanna Chamber Ensemble is uniquely equipped to tackle the question: What about Borntiansky’s music has for centuries moved people in prayer, and why does it continue to do so today?

By juxtaposing Bortnyansky’s liturgical harmonizations with several of his more para-liturgical choral concerti, our concert program aims to demystify the essence of his compositional language. Armed with a nuanced and informed musicological approach and a deeply rooted love for this music, the goal of our upcoming concert is to cultivate a stylistic approach to unlock the treasures of Bortniansky’'s works by decoding his compositional language.

What is the value of Bortniansky’s music to Orthodox prayer of yesterday, today, and tomorrow? Join us - and decide for yourself - as we explore these questions in concerts on October 26th and 27th in NYC.

Heath DeGaramo, bass-baritone

A farmboy from Northeastern Pennsylvania now living in Tennessee, Heath DeGaramo attended Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, where he spent six years studying voice under Dr. Youngsuck Kim, appearing in five operas, and singing and touring the United States and Europe with the world-renowned Mansfield University Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Peggy Dettwiler. Music for Heath did not start in college though. He has spent over 20 years performing in some capacity, whether it be playing guitar and singing country music and rock n roll with his mother on the weekends, cello and trombone in orchestras and bands since childhood, or singing in church for most of his life. Heath is very pleased to be able to bring his background in classical voice together with his spiritual life as a member of Osanna.

One of Osanna's sopranos, Nastya Shmytova, is a musicologist currently obtaining her PhD with a focus on Byzantine and Slavic chant at Princeton University.

Over the summer, Nastya has been engaged in professional work pertaining to her research and to choral singing. In June, she attended a workshop in Meteora, Greece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the topics of Byzantine monasticism, Byzantine-Slavic Church relations, the frescoes of the Cretan school and the material culture of the Meteora monasteries. After the workshop, Nastya spent three weeks studying Modern Greek at the Princeton Athens Center in Athens.

In the first half of July, Nastya spent a week in Devon, UK, at the Byrd Ensemble International Course, focusing on preparing a concert of choral works by William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, alongside members of the Byrd Ensemble. This included two concerts and a master class in London with Peter Phillips, the director of the Tallis scholars, alongside other workshops on Renaissance choral and ensemble singing.

Finally, Nastya visited the British Library in London in order to conduct her dissertation research on a 17th century MS of Russian polyphonic demestvenny chant. In August, Nastya will be participating in a conducting workshop led by Dr. James Jordan of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ as a conducting fellow.

Meet the Choir Monday! Gabriel Sander: Bass
Graduated in 2022 from The Ohio State University with a bachelor's in both Journalism and International Studies. In addition to studying piano for over a decade, he has sung bass and played both bassoon and saxophone in numerous ensembles throughout high school and college. He recently completed an internship at the U.S. House of Representatives and hopes to work in diplomacy. He currently sings with the St. John's Cathedral Choir in DC and grew up singing at St. Sergius Cathedral near Cleveland and St. George Church in Loveland, OH. Being a descendant of a Russian Orthodox priest martyred by the Bolsheviks, Gabe feels a special connection to the beautiful melodies and traditions in Orthodox liturgics.
