Can the G7 survive in a fragmented world?

In a new AFPC-USA podcast produced in partnership with the Hinrich Foundation, Peter Draper, Professor and Executive Director of the Institute for International Trade at the University of Adelaide, examines the future of the G7 as it faces growing global uncertainty.

Hosted by Roseanne Gerin, the conversation explores how the G7 has shaped global economic governance for more than 50 years — and whether it can continue to remain relevant amid the rise of China, the expansion of BRICS, the influence of the G20, tensions with Russia, and political divisions within Western democracies.

Draper explains why the G7’s informal diplomacy still matters, how leaders use private conversations to manage sensitive global challenges, and why journalists should pay closer attention to the domestic political forces shaping international summits.

Can the G7 survive in a more fragmented world?

In a new Foreign Press Podcast episode produced in partnership with the Hinrich Foundation, journalist Roseanne Gerin speaks with Peter Draper, Professor and Executive Director of the Institute for International Trade at the University of Adelaide, about the future of the Group of Seven and its role in global economic governance.

The conversation examines how the G7 has evolved over the past 50 years, why its informal structure still matters, and how geopolitical shifts — including the rise of China, the emergence of BRICS, the expansion of the G20, domestic political divisions, and changing U.S. leadership — are testing the group’s relevance and cohesion.

For international correspondents covering trade, geopolitics, diplomacy, financial markets, and global governance, this discussion offers valuable context on one of the world’s most influential forums and the challenges it faces in a rapidly changing international order.

Today, on World Press Freedom Day, the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the USA honors the courage, integrity, and vital work of journalists around the world.

A free and independent press is essential to democracy, accountability, and the public’s right to know. At a time when journalists continue to face censorship, intimidation, violence, imprisonment, and growing threats to their independence, we reaffirm our commitment to defending press freedom as a fundamental pillar of open societies.

Foreign correspondents play a critical role in helping the world understand events beyond borders. Their work brings facts, context, and human stories to global audiences, often under difficult and dangerous conditions.

On this day, we stand in solidarity with all journalists who pursue truth, hold power accountable, and defend the public’s right to be informed.
