To wrap up Women’s History Month, Deputy Paez recently served as the featured speaker for Women Transforming Criminal Justice at Park University. The event celebrates leadership, service, and the impact of women shaping the future of criminal justice.

Deputy Paez shared her story and journey to achieving her lifelong dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. She pursued that dream at 45 years old, not letting age stand in the way of showing up for her community and making a difference both inside and outside the Sheriff’s Office.

“Being committed to serving our community goes beyond the badge,” she said. “It is about serving our citizens, fostering trust, networking, volunteering, and creating meaningful relationships with every interaction.”

Thank you to Park University for having Deputy Paez as this year’s featured speaker.

Last week, the Kansas Department of Corrections presented a token of appreciation to Master Deputy Purdin for his contributions to jail safety across Kansas.

Beginning last year, Master Deputy Purdin and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Detention Response Team (DRT) assisted multiple jails across the state with search operations. These operations are unique in that K9s help detect what officers can't see, locating contraband that might otherwise go unnoticed.

After hearing about the success of these efforts, the Kansas Department of Corrections requested Purdin’s assistance with a search at the Lansing Correctional Facility. Fourteen K9 teams across the state participated in the operation, resulting in the seizure of contraband, including illegal narcotics and improvised weapons, even within the high-risk segregation unit.

Safety is a top priority in correctional facilities. Officers conduct these searches to identify and remove contraband and dangerous items, which can pose serious risks if left undetected. This work is critical to maintaining a safe environment for both staff and those in custody.

In recognition of the successful operation, KDOC presented a keepsake plaque to Master Deputy Purdin and K9 Diesel. We’re grateful for the dedication of Purdin and our DRT members, who continue to support not only our facility, but others across the state.

Our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers are with these young men’s families and agency.
There are no words to ease the pain of such a significant loss, so we will honor their sacrifice by never forgetting the courage, service, and love they gave to others. May they rest in peace, and may their families find strength in the support and love of a grateful community.
