The Trump administration is launching a special branch of the 988 Lifeline crisis intervention hotline that assists LGBTQ+ youth, but without the Trevor Project, which helped pioneer the concept.

Dubbed the 911 for mental health, the 988 hotline has long been helping people through mental health emergencies and is often credited for reducing teen and young adult s*icide deaths.

In June last year, the Trump administration announced it would stop offering the hotline’s ‘press 3’ option for LGBTQ+ youth due to lack of funding and gave it a month’s notice.

Now, however, the option is set to be brought back to 988 with the $33 million that the government has reserved for LGBTQ+ youth interventions, reported ABC News on 26 June. But the LGBTQ+ youth s*icide prevention organisation The Trevor Project could be left out of the line-up of life-saving crisis services.
