Talk trails with us at the library! Ever wondered how New Castle ended up with 45 trails and an IMBA Trail Town designation? Come find out.

Tuesday, August 11 · 5–6 PM · Garfield County Libraries — New Castle Branch, part of the New Castle Conversations series.

The story of two decades of volunteer trail building, a tour of the system from Colorow to Burning Mountain, what’s underfoot (fern fossils! a burning coal seam!), trail tips and seasonal closures — and how to get involved. Free, all ages, no bike required.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 Downvalley Dirty Dozen.

Two great days at Alder Park, four races, and another fun weekend on the trails. We had 33 riders in the 20-mile, 14 in the 7-mile, 23 runners in the Trail 10K, and 5 people tough enough to take on both the 20-mile and 10K combo.

Congratulations to this year’s winners:

20 Mile: Butch Peterson & Elsa Lapeze
7 Mile: Josh Borgmann & Morgan Hill
Trail 10K: Wesley J. Toews & Kaylan Grace Riley
Combo: Ben Jackson & Elsa Lapeze

And congratulations to everyone who crossed the finish line. Full podiums are in the photos.

This event doesn’t happen without volunteers. Thank you to everyone who helped with setup, registration, timing, course marking, aid stations, cleanup, and everything in between. Thanks as well to all the kids who came out for the free Sunday races.

A big thank-you to Sunlight Mountain Resort for loaning us the big orange start arch. It made the start and finish line feel pretty special.

We’re also grateful for the businesses and organizations that support the Dirty Dozen year after year: The Neffs Co, Down Valley Brewing, Town of New Castle, Karp Neu Hanlon, Sunlight Mountain Resort, GHO, Nutrient Farm, [82], Green Cross, Defiance Cyclery, Spirits of Downtown, Bechtel & Santo, Love Your Dog, Trailhead Chiropractic, Independence Run and Hike, Medley on Main, and Troxell Law.

Full results and all 226 race photos are at newcastle-trails.org/dirty-dozen (http://newcastle-trails.org/dirty-dozen).
