Elizabeth Empson Battell and Gertrude Ross Till Read came from different counties (Kent and New Castle) and diverse socio-economic classes, but both worked tirelessly

to support and keep Delaware united in the cause for independence. Celebrating Women's History Month 🇺🇸

Join us on March 13 at noon for a presentation by Dana Niemeyer from the Delaware Public Archives. She will examine documents from the Delaware Public Archives’ collections to discuss Catherine Bevan and Sarah Kirk and the changing legal system of a new Delaware.

When Delaware declared its independence in 1776, it prompted a plethora of changes pertaining to its government and legal system. As the state grew and evolved, it reflected on crime and punishment in this new era. One crime that the new government reviewed was petit treason, which was treasonous acts committed against a person of authority other than the government.
Throughout its history, two Delaware women were tried for petit treason: Catherine Bevan in 1731 and Sarah Kirk in 1787. While their charges were the same, their punishments were not.

Honoring Women of Achievement
Welcome to Women’s History Month, grown from a one-week California event in 1978. Two years later, National Women’s History Week was cited by presidential proclamation. Then, in 1987, Congress created the monthlong recognition. Today we honor the late Mabel Lloyd Ridgely, who died in 1962. Shown at her Dover home, she was a founder of a garden tour that became Dover Days, our capital’s biggest history and heritage celebration, set for its 93rd year this May 1-2. Ridgely also was a key advocate for creation of the Delaware Public Archives, one of the nation’s oldest. Her portrait hangs in the archives and its research room is named for her.

As we commemorate America 250, the Battell and Read Chapter, NSDAR proudly honors the often-forgotten Black patriots of the American Revolution whose courage helped secure our nation’s independence.

During the Revolutionary War, thousands of African American men—both free and enslaved—answered the call to serve. Among the most distinguished was the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, known for its extraordinary bravery. This integrated regiment, which included a large number of Black soldiers, played a pivotal role in the Battle of Rhode Island, holding the line against repeated Hessian assaults and demonstrating unwavering commitment to the cause of liberty.

We also remember patriots such as:

▪ Prince Greene – who served with honor in the Rhode Island Regiment.
▪ Jack Sisson – who helped capture British General Richard Prescott in a daring nighttime raid.

These men fought for the promise of freedom at a time when that promise was not yet fully extended to them. Their sacrifices remind us that the story of America’s founding is richer, more complex, and more inclusive than often told.

As Daughters of the American Revolution, we are committed to preserving and sharing the stories of all Patriots who supported the cause of independence. This Black History Month, we proudly recognize the legacy, service, and sacrifice of these courageous individuals.

DAR America 250! Scholarship Accepting Applications Nov. 1 Through Jan. 31

Mon, October 27, 2025

Ten $25,000 scholarships for students studying American history will be given by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 2026 to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

WASHINGTON, DC – Undergraduate and graduate students studying American history can apply for a $25,000 scholarship from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) between November 1, 2025 and January 31, 2026. The DAR America 250! Scholarship will provide a one-time $25,000 award to ten students in 2026 and is offered to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of independence.

“We are so thrilled to expand the America 250! Scholarship in its final year of being awarded in order to be able to offer ten $25,000 scholarships to students,” said Ginnie Sebastian Storage, DAR President General. “We see no better way to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary than with these transformative and life-changing scholarships investing in the development of the next generation of American historians who will study our past and help us understand new aspects of the great American story.”

The DAR gives more than 30 scholarships annually awarding close to a total of $250,000 a year to students across the country, but the organization has never provided a singular scholarship of this size. The significant amount of the America 250! Scholarship, and that it will be awarded to ten separate students, is a testament of the importance of American history education that DAR places emphasis on and in honor of the special celebrations taking place throughout 2026 in honor of the 250th anniversary of the nation.
Applicants should apply through the DAR online scholarship portal, DAR Academic Works.

Students currently majoring in American history in an accredited university or college undergraduate or graduate program in the year 2026 are eligible to apply. Recipients must be United States citizens, prove a minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and prepare a one-page online essay either on the founding of our nation or on the applicant’s personal volunteer achievements for community and country.

Students are urged to apply well ahead of the January 31, 2026 deadline, as the scholarship application requires transcripts and letters of recommendation that must be submitted by others. Applicants will find that the scholarship portal will offer other DAR scholarships they may qualify for as well. Questions can be addressed to [email protected].

Applications may be submitted at:

🎄 Battell and Read Chapter Supports Stockings for Soldiers! 🇺🇸

Members of the Battell and Read Chapter, DAR, spent a fun and meaningful evening helping with Stockings for Soldiers in Wilmington. We folded donated socks, sorted Christmas stockings, and labeled chapstick—simple tasks that will bring smiles to service members spending the holidays away from home.

It was relaxing, filled with laughter, good conversation, and wonderful camaraderie. 💙❤️

We’re proud to support this amazing project that sends comfort, care, and gratitude to those who serve.

We will participate once again on November 6.
