πŸŒˆπŸ“š LGBTQIA+ HISTORY MONTH: HONORING CRAIG RODWELL πŸ“šπŸŒˆ

October is LGBTQIA+ History Month, and today The New Castle Prism Initiative honors Craig Rodwell (1940–1993) a pioneering activist whose work helped shape the LGBTQ+ rights movement before and after Stonewall. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Rodwell participated in some of the earliest demonstrations for LGBTQ+ rights, including a 1964 protest over the U.S. Army’s handling of gay men's draft records and the historic 1966 Sip-In at Julius’ Bar in New York City.

But his activism didn't stop in the streets. In 1967, Rodwell opened the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop, widely recognized as the first openly gay and le***an bookstore in the United States. The bookstore became an important gathering place where LGBTQ+ people could find literature, community, and representation at a time when those things were often difficult to find.

πŸ“š Representation matters. Community spaces matter. Our history matters.

This LGBTQIA+ History Month, we honor Craig Rodwell and the many people who helped build the foundations of the movement we continue today.

We remember those who came before us. We celebrate their courage. And we continue the work. πŸŒˆπŸ’œ

πŸŒˆπŸ“š LGBTQIA+ HISTORY MONTH: HONORING HARVEY MILK πŸ“šπŸŒˆ

October is LGBTQIA+ History Month, and today The New Castle Prism Initiative honors Harvey Milk (1930–1978) a trailblazer whose life and activism helped change the course of LGBTQIA+ political representation. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

In 1977, Harvey Milk won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. He became a powerful voice for the LGBTQIA+ community and an advocate for equality, visibility, and the right of LGBTQIA+ people to participate openly in civic life.

Milk's life was tragically cut short in 1978 when he was assassinated. Following his death, thousands of people gathered in San Francisco for a candlelight march to City Hall a powerful demonstration of community, grief, solidarity, and resistance.

✨ Harvey Milk's legacy reminds us that representation matters. When LGBTQIA+ people have a seat at the table, our communities have a stronger voice in the decisions that affect our lives.

This LGBTQIA+ History Month, we remember those who came before us and continue working toward a future where everyone can live openly, participate fully, and be represented. πŸ’œ

We remember. We honor. We continue the work. 🌈
