This Saturday, 6 September 2025, we’re selling our first batch of cider and Gala apples. As other varieties become ready, we’ll keep you up to date on their availability. As a reminder, our cider ($3 per quart) is freshly pressed here in the orchard the day before. Apples are sold by the peck ($12) and 1/2 peck ($6). Looking forward to seeing you.

September is right around the corner, marking the beginning of our apple harvest. In July and August we thinned apples and applied bird scare reflective tape to ward off curious birds (it kind of works…). When we don’t thin out a tree soon enough, there’s a chance a limb may break from the weight of apples. Unfortunately, this has happened more than once. Support poles help with heavy crop loads. We’re looking forward to opening our market here in the orchard, early to mid-September. We certainly have more apples than last year and hope to have enough to make cider also.

Last year we had a small apple crop but 2025 is looking much better. We had loads of blossoms in the early Spring, the bees did their part, and we now have plenty of little green apples. They all look similar at this time of the season but the Empire, Gala, Honey Crisp, and Golden Delicious are looking especially good. These are our early apples, ready in early September, followed by Fuji, Liberty, Northen Spy, Yellow Pippin, and Spitzenburg. Open Pomme will sell our apples and cider from the orchard starting in early September. We will keep you posted on exact dates, variety developments, and when we’ll be selling cider. Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you in the Fall.

Our last 2023 market is this Saturday, 4 Nov, where we’ll have the last batch of our popular apple cider and Fuji, Mutsu, and Yellow Pippin apples. Our first market at the orchard was a great success where we met new local customers, long time customers and friends, and neighbors within walking distance. Featured in a photo here is Sam, our white barn cat, who you may have seen during our prior market. You may see him again this Saturday. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you one more time this year at the orchard.

This Saturday, 21 October, will be the opening of our 2023 farm market stall on the orchard at 9800 South Palmer Road, New Carlisle, where we’ll have multiple apple varieties for sale, all grown in the orchard. We’ll also have our popular apple cider made on site from our apples. Our USDA production approved cider has been a favorite of farmers market customers from Beavercreek, Huber Heights, and beyond. Please stop by for some locally grown apples and freshly made apple cider. And remember, Open Pomme Orchard proceeds go to local food banks. Hope to see you then.

Tomorrow, Saturday 14th, we’ll have several new apple varieties at the Farmers Market at the Heights, 8625 Brandt Pike, Huber Heights, OH, next to the YMCA. There will be Johnathan, Golden Delicious, Fuji, Mutsu (also called Crispin), Criterion, and Spitzenburg, varieties you don’t see in the grocery store. All are good for eating while some prefer the Criterion and Golden Delicious for making apple sauce and apple dumplings while others prefer the Mutsu for making pies. The Spitzenburg, is an old American apple from the 1700s, grown at Monticello and a favorite of Thomas Jefferson.
