THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED TO TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES:

Presentation by Pat Fisher

Berrien Ecology:
What Makes SW Michigan so unique?

Tuesday January 27, 6:00pm-7:30pm
at the New Buffalo Township Public Library
33 N Thompson St, New Buffalo, MI 49117

Southwest Michigan and Northwest Indiana are among the country's most geologically and biologically diverse regions.

Pat Fisher, President of Harbor Country Hikers, will cover a wide range of topics such as how our area was originally shaped by glaciers and the effect of several thousand years of wind that formed the dunes.

Following these phenomena, "Ecotones" were created that act as interfaces where different large-scale ecological systems meet and exchange energy and organisms.

In modern times, these unique structures face challenges, some man-made and some the result of natural environmental change and evolution.

Ultimately, we need to ask ourselves what role we will play in the preservation, diversity and sustainability of our unique environment in SW Michigan.

The Event is put on by Friends of the New Buffalo Library.

I just received word that the trails are groomed for cross country skiing on the NBAS Nature Study Trails and Turtle Creek Preserve trail system. There are plenty of ungroomed trails that can be used for snowshoeing or backcountry skiing. This task is performed by NB neighbors using professional equipment they acquired on their own. The New Buffalo Area Schools and Chikaming Open Lands give us permission to use their properties.

One of the gentlemen grooming the trails put together a FB page .

A link to a map we used in previous years can be found here. I may be a little different than what was groomed this year.

Thank You Tracy for providing such a special place to hold our Annual Membership Meeting. The perfect setting is a treasure! The hike throught the backdunes was good for the soul and the hike to Lake Michigan always reminds me why I love SW Michigan.
