Michigan Conservation Stewards Program Registration open until August 9

The MSU Michigan Conservation Stewards Program (CSP) returns for its 20th year this fall, including a Berrien County cohort in addition to (5) other regions across the state. Registration for this dynamic 8-week, hybrid program is open and available at events.anr.msu.edu/micsp2026 through Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026, with scholarship opportunities available for all.

Through the Conservation Stewards Program, participants learn essential strategies to understand and help restore and conserve ecosystems in Michigan communities. Beginning Aug. 27, 2026, through Oct. 22, 2026, Berrien County weekly evening sessions will be held on Thursdays, 6-9 p.m.; no class will be held on Oct. 15.

Other Happenings: Fellow HCH Member Ed Ravine will be the featured artist at Granor Farm for dinner and an interview on 4/25/26. Some of his art is inspired by our hikes. The New Buffalo X-C Ski Trails are freshly groomed and in great condition with our ongoing fluffy snow (and cold).

What Makes SW Michigan so unique?

Southwest Michigan and Northwest Indiana are among the country's most geologically and biologically diverse regions.

Pat Fisher, President of Harbor Country Hikers, will cover a wide range of topics such as how our area was originally shaped by glaciers and the effect of several thousand years of wind that formed the dunes.

Following these phenomena, "Ecotones" were created that act as interfaces where different large-scale ecological systems meet and exchange energy and organisms.

In modern times, these unique structures face challenges, some man-made and some the result of natural environmental change and evolution.

Ultimately, we need to ask ourselves what role we will play in the preservation, diversity and sustainability of our unique environment in SW Michigan.
