Congratulations to our member Garnet Spagrud on receiving an Award of Merit of 83 pts on his Rhyncholaeliocattleya (Rlc.) Lustrous Jade ‘Mr. Sable’ AM/AOS at the Deep Cut Orchid Society Annual Show this last February.

Garnet entered this plant in the NJOS display and it was singled out by the judges for AOS award consideration. It is recognized for its beautifully formed and presented concolor chartreuse flowers.

Rhyncholaeliocattleya is a mouthful of a name for man-made hybrids between the genus Rhyncholaelia, and Cattleya. Rhycholaelia digbyana, formerly Brassavola digbyana, has a huge frilly lip that is often passed on to its progeny, and its influence can be clearly seen in the huge lip of this Lustrous Jade ‘Mr. Sable’

Garnet has chosen the variety name ‘Mr. Sable’ who was a very special Burmese cat of his that he had for 17 years. Congratulations again!

Congratulations to our member Rafi Wahl on receiving a Highly Commended Certificate of 79 pts on his Miltoniopsis QF Kiai ‘King of Dreams’ at the NJOS Annual Show this last January.

Ralf entered this plant in the NJOS Show display and was singled out by the judges for AOS award consideration. It is recognized for its massive flowers that are as big as a hand, and for its very flat shape. Many miltoniopsis petals tend to reflex backwards as they age, but this plant stayed relatively flat!

Miltoniopsis are cool growing orchids from equatorial regions of central and South America that are related to and often confused with the warm growing Miltonias. Only a handful of Miltoniopsis species have produced a plethora of hybrids in a rainbow of colors, which just goes to show what dedicated breeding can do!

Miltoniopsis have a reputation of being finicky to grow, as they don’t handle high temperatures well and need more consistent moisture than other Oncidium relatives. They also are relatively salt sensitive and need pure water or their leaf tips will brown.

Ralf has chosen the variety name ‘King of Dreams’ to grace this regal specimen as a reference to the character Morpheus in the show The Sandman. Congratulations again!

Congratulations to our member Garnet Spagrud who received awards on two of his plants at last weekend’s Mid Atlantic Judging.

His Phalaenopsis stuartiana var. nobilis won an Award of Merit of 84 pts, recognizing the flower quality, and a Certificate of Cultural Merit of 86 pts for its outstanding cultivation.

Phalaenopsis stuartiana is a species that is usually noted for its beautifully mottled leaves, however the nobilis variant lacks the mottled foliage, but has a nice yellow color in the flowers.

Garnet has given it the name ‘Florence’ after his mother.

His other plant, Paphiopedilum Fumi’s Delight ‘Just as Nice’ won an Award of Merit of 86 pts in recognition of its flower quality.

Fumi’s Delight is a primary hybrid between Paph. armeniacum and Paph. micranthum, and inherits the best traits of both. Armeniacum contributes its bright yellow color, and micranthum contributes its tessellated patterning and huge pouch.

Congratulations again Garnet!
