Detainees at the for-profit detention facility Delaney Hall in Newark have been on a hunger strike for nearly a week. Advocates from groups allied with our unions—New Labor, Cosecha, Make the Road, and others—have been on-site engaging in protest and attempting to prevent immigration officials from transferring hunger-strikers to a different facility.
Strikers are demanding speedy and fair resolution of their cases, the release of children, the elderly, and those who are ill, and better conditions within the facility.
Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement have used pepper spray and pepper bullets on protesters, and are attempting to force them away from the center. They refused to allow Gov. Mikie Sherrill to enter and tour the facility, and have accused NJ Representatives Analilia Mejia (D-11) and LaMonica McIver (D-10), two union-backed members of Congress, and Representative Rob Menendez (D-8), who visited Delaney Hall, of engaging in a political stunt, even as they confirmed reports of medical understaffing and immigrants being held for months. Senator Andy Kim, another union endorsed elected official, was hit with pepper spray when he visited the detention center earlier this week.
With detainees now in their fifth day of their hunger strike and protests continuing, we want to ask members of our unions to do what they can to help. We are proud to stand beside our community allies, and Reps. Mejia, McIver, and Menendez and Sen. Kim in support of the detainees, as we defend our communities from this federal assault on the rights of detainees and their supporters. Many union members have been involved in the protests already, but we encourage those who can to show up this week in support. Union members will be outside Delaney Hall tomorrow from 6am to 6pm in support of the hunger strike and to demand the immediate closure of Delaney Hall.
Now, as always, we demand ICE out of Newark and all of our communities. We need to end this assault on our neighbors and our rights now, before it escalates.
