A huge congratulations to Dance alum Hannah (Sego) Olmo (BFA'15/EdM'16), named NJ State Teacher of the Year for 2026–27! According to the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), Olmo built a four-year dance program at Dover High School in Morris County, and created the Dance Club and the school’s first chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. Dance Club participation has grown more than 300% in two years. "Hannah’s passion for teaching isn’t the only thing that stands out; it is that she identified a gap in arts education and built something meaningful to fill it," NJEA president Steve Beatty said. The five-year joint Bachelor of Fine Arts/Master of Education degree is a project of Mason Gross School of the Arts and the Graduate School of Education. When it debuted in 2010, it was the state's first graduate-level teacher-education program in dance. Reminder! Join us next month for a workshop on "Ballet Now" with Daphne Marcelle Lee! ✨

The workshop will explore how ballet continues to evolve through pop culture, performance, technology, and pathways beyond traditional company life, while considering new approaches to learning and sharing dance. Participants will engage in movement phrases that blend classical ballet with polyrhythms and street vernacular, and prompts that encourage storytelling, personal expression, and the development of movement quality.

Daphne Marcelle Lee, (she/her) began her dance training in Rahway, NJ at the Rahway Dance Theatre under the direction of Ms. Jay Skeete-Lee. She graduated with Honors from the Ailey/Fordham B.F.A program in dance and is a recipient of the Denise Jefferson Scholarship award. She also holds a Masters of Fine Arts from Hollins University. She has danced for the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ailey II, Collage Dance Collective, and Black Iris Project among others. She is currently a cast member in Disney's The Lion King on Broadway in NYC.

Join us in congratulating a member of our dance community, Hannah Olmo, on being named the 2026-2027 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year! 🎉👏

Hannah is a dance educator in the Dover School District, and received her EdM in Dance Education at Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts. “Hannah has made dance part of the educational experience for students who might otherwise not have that opportunity, and she has found a way that honors their identities, talents and potential. That kind of impact changes generations and the Dover School District has provided that to its students through Hannah’s dance program.” - NJEA Vice President Petal Robertson.
