Congratulations to the March Snackness Champions, Mrs. Gutierrez and Mrs. Yousef's 4th Grade Class from Lord Stirling! Their snack, "Lucy's first day at the beach with her family" taught us about the importance of teamwork in keeping our environment clean for marine animals like Lucy the leatherback turtle and her family -- and to never give up!

March Snackness, a healthy cooking competition inspired by March Madness, challenges students to create their own snack recipe that makes curricular connections across subject areas and follows the principals of "Eat a Rainbow" and "Go, Grow, Glow" foods. Students work with FoodCorps service members and their teachers to create their final snacks, which are then judged on creativity, presentation, and of course: the "yum" factor!

The winners from McKinley, Lord Stirling, and Blanquita B. Valenti Communty Schools and AC Redshaw Elementary School have been competing all month for the title of the 2024 March Snackness Champions, which took place at Blanquita B. Valenti Community School yesterday morning. March Snackness has been happening in the district since 2017 (the brainchild of Steven Louka, current Vice Principal of Blanquita B. Valenti Community School), but this was the first year that multiple schools participated and competed together in the same location during the final Championship round!

Congratulations to ALL of the students who competed! As one wise student said yesterday, "Even if we don't win, that's okay. I had fun and I'm glad we made it this far."

Meet Miriam! Currently serving her first year as a Food Education service member with Greater Newark Conservancy , Miriam is making a big impact in the schools she partners with!

Miriam is an active member of the Lincoln School community where she teaches standards-aligned cooking and gardening lessons, regularly leads taste tests in cafeterias and during family engagement events, and also collaborates with the administration and student leaders on the Nutrition Advisory Committee to promote a nourishing school food environment that’s centered in her student’s wellness. Miriam also serves with Harriet Tubman Elementary School where she recently applied for and received a $500 school garden grant to repair their garden beds and purchase new tools and materials for her students to use while learning with FoodCorps outdoors!

One of the highlights of Miriam's service so far has been witnessing her students become leaders in their school food community by being brave in trying new foods and serving as role models in encouraging others to ! At her school's Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, Miriam led a pico de gallo taste test: "My fourth grade students were excited to have tried something new and wanted to help others have the same experience! So, instead of the tasting being just me at my table, my students organized themselves to go into the crowd with recipe and information cards to spread the word about the tasting and encourage folks to try something new like they had."

Additionally, Miriam is a part of the FoodCorps Service Member Action Committee (SMAC). Here, she engages with FoodCorps national staff in vital discussions about service experiences, connects with affinity groups and builds her leadership skills. Her enthusiasm and commitment to these roles showcase her as a true leader in both the Newark and FoodCorps communities.

Meet Rachel! Currently serving her second year as a School Nutrition service member with the New Brunswick Public Schools, Rachel has been making a huge impact in school cafeterias and classrooms across New Brunswick!

After earning her Masters Degree in Community Nutrition & Dietetics from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, Rachel was inspired to join FoodCorps New Jersey in pursuit of her goal of becoming a Registered Dietician.

During her first year of service, Rachel launched an exciting new partnership with , vastly increasing the number of Jersey grown fruits and vegetables in New Brunswick's school meals program and bringing their local procurement efforts to the next level. She also managed the district's Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program across 3 schools, successfully earning both second and third place for 2 of those schools in the New Jersey Department of Agriculture's FFVP "VIP" (Very Important Produce) Award program and expanding FFVP to 4 schools for this program year.

This year, Rachel has been busy collaborating with her fellow service members in New Brunswick to lead Pop-Up Farmers Markets at schools across the district, providing even more Jersey grown and seasonal fruits and vegetables to students and their families accompanied by nutrition information. Students were able to bring home fun items like blueberry honey, kiwi berries, apples, kale, tomatoes and more -- all grown and produced by New Jersey farmers!

Other aspects of Rachel's service include teaching hands-on lessons in classrooms about the fruits and vegetables served through FFVP, leading taste tests in cafeterias to increase student voice and choice in school meals and culturally relevant menu items, and making connections with local farmers.

Apply today to serve with FoodCorps New Jersey and continue the incredible work of Rachel and other members like her across the state! foodcorps.org/apply
