Our budgeting survey is live!! Anyone who lives permanently or semi-permanently can take it. It’ll be around 10-15 minutes to complete and we do have a Spanish version, as well. You can find the survey on our linktree or by typing out the tinyurl. We will also have paper copies be distributed and will update you guys with the location soon.

IMPORTANT: If you live in or near New Brunswick and you want to help distribute paper copies to residents door-to-door, please fill out the volunteer form also located on our linktree.

If you spoke during the council meeting yesterday, we appreciate you using your voice! Despite multiple explaining their concerns about the amount of money in the budget going towards the police and the forced closing of the Lincoln Annex School (which will displace hundreds of Latinx students), the city council members have shown that they are not listening to the community.

This fight won’t stop until we get city council to listen to us. There’s another council meeting on July 1 and the official budget public hearing is on July 15. We need all of you to continue emailing, calling and sitting in during these meetings! But above all we want you guys to educate yourselves. We’ll do what we can to help by posting resources on here and on our Instagram! (graphic by lior-benz on IG)

Here’s a full breakdown of New Brunswick’s 2020 budget. 21.4% of the budget goes towards funding the NBPD and that percentage doesn’t include other indirect costs (see the last slide). In comparison, the Department of Public Works (which houses the division of parks, division of health, youth service systems etc.) is only 8% of the budget. [graph by on IG]

The attack on Black lives is not foreign to New Brunswick. In 2011, NBPD shot and killed Barry Deloatch, an unarmed black man. The officers claimed Deloatch attempted to hit them with a wooden stick. Despite protests and support from the NAACP, the officers involved were not charged and even given paid administrative leave. We are advocating to defund NBPD because victims of police brutality deserve to get justice and nobody should killed over holding a wooden stick. (Graphic by -benz on IG)

This week we’ll be posting some studies and cases that show how NBPD treats New Brunswick residents, especially those of color. Today we‘re sharing a 2015 investigation done by ACLU. The investigation reveals that New Brunswick was one of four NJ cities where Black people were more likely to be arrested for low level offenses. Many police officers will target communities of color to fulfill ticket quotas and line their pockets at the expense of Black and brown folk. We are advocating to as a means to end unnecessary arrests that can ruin the lives of BIPOC. Thank you to .benz on IG for the graphics
