CMHA is proud to partner with Waterbury PAL as part of the Gun Violence Prevention Partnership. When we work together to take care of our communities, everyone benefits.

Waterbury Health Department (WHD) has convened the Waterbury Gun Violence Prevention Partnership (GVPP) to better understand the drivers of gun violence in our community. WHD subcontracted with the Waterbury Police Activity League (PAL), which is adept at community engagement, to expedite getting funds to community partners to support their existing programming or to adopt a new approach. WHD will help them collect better data about their programs and share those outcomes through the GVPP learning collaborative. The collaborative will study the ecosystem of programs in the city to determine what initiatives can be replicated or amplified and what impact those programs have on the drivers of gun violence.

“The investment by Connecticut Department of Public Health in local health departments across the state highlights the value of engaging community organizations led by local health departments in a public health approach to gun violence prevention,” said Aisling McGuckin, Waterbury Director of Health, “Through the learning collaborative, we are looking at both risk and protective factors that can interrupt cycles of violence. We rely on community partners like PAL to extend the reach of this initiative.”

The goal is to identify root causes of gun violence, build trust with the community and intervene before violence occurs.
